Tosca is certainly Puccini's most dramatic work, cruelty and sadism are the background to the story of love and death set in Rome in 1800.

At the Puccini Festival 2022 it will be presented with the staging that bears the signature of Pier Luigi Pizzi and which will see the reliable baton of Enrico Calesso on the podium of the Festival Puccini Orchestra.

Pizzi, who also signs scenes and costumes, makes a temporal shift, so that from Rome in the Napoleonic era we arrive at Italy in the late thirties.

"From this historical moment I exploited the political tensions, the arrogance of power."

For his Tosca Pizzi, he dresses the characters with 1930s clothes and the papal guards with fascist uniforms.

An approach wanted by one of the greatest directors of melodrama to denounce any form of totalitarianism that leads men in power to abuse others.

Tosca è certamente l’opera più drammatica di Puccini, crudeltà e sadismo fanno da sfondo alla storia d’amore e di morte ambientata a Roma nel 1800.

Al Festival Puccini 2022 sarà presentata con l’ allestimento che porta la firma di Pier Luigi Pizzi e che vedrà sul podio dell’Orchestra del Festival Puccini l’affidabile bacchetta di Enrico Calesso.

Pizzi che firma anche scene e costumi compie uno spostamento temporale, per cui dalla Roma in età napoleonica si arriva all’Italia di fine anni Trenta.

“Di questo momento storico ho sfruttato le tensioni politiche, l’arroganza del potere.”

Per la sua Tosca Pizzi, veste i personaggi con abiti anni Trenta e le guardie papaline con divise fasciste.

Un approccio voluto da uno dei più grandi registi del melodramma per denunciare qualsiasi forma di totalitarismo che porta gli uomini al potere ad abusi verso il prossimo.
