When Puccini, in 1889, has the opportunity to watch the famous Sarah Bernard as Sadness in Victorian Sardu's spectacular drama of the same name, written two years earlier, he is overwhelmed by the idea of ​​writing an opera on her story. Although he only succeeds in realizing this idea a few years later, he does not stop working for the composer. In the meantime, he created Bohemia, thereby solidifying his previously acquired Manon Lesko fame, followed by Tosca. However, there are a number of difficulties in writing it. Years ago, Ricordi commissioned the writing of an opera with the same story by the composer Alberto Franquetti on the libretto of Ilica. Now, however, Ricordi takes his order from Franquette and assigns it to Puccini, who immediately leaves for Paris and meets the author of the drama.

            Sardu strongly urges Puccini to show him his plan for an opera on the plot of his "Longing" and only then gives his consent. He even asks for a pretty significant percentage of copyright. Once blessed with the writer, Puccini without wasting time assigns the writing of his future opera to his librettists Jacosa and Ilica. Experienced theaters, they rework the five-act drama into three libretto acts. Victor Sardu himself admits over time that despite the cuts, libretto not only does not take away from the content of the drama but even makes it more intense psychologically.

            In the summer of 1898, the 40-year-old Puccini began to feverishly work on the thirsty "Longing" and in less than a year and a half managed to complete his new masterpiece. The Tosca premiere takes place at the Roman Theater of Constance on January 14th and recipes an enormous success. The same year, the opera was staged in London and Paris, and then in all the world opera houses.

Още същата година операта се поставя в Лондон и Париж, а след това и във всички световни оперни театри.
