The premiere of Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca" was the highlight of the 2010 Munich Opera Festival. Conductor: Fabio Luisi - Staging: Luc Bondy.

After the acclaimed Lohengrin, German star tenor Jonas Kaufmann returned to his hometown to play Cavaradossi. The title role was sung by the renowned Finnish soprano Karita Mattila. "When Mattila rises to a duet with Cavaradossi alias Jonas Kaufmann in the final act, it is pure pleasure how two voices merge seamlessly here," wrote the Donaukurier enthusiastically.

Mattila's compatriot Juha Uusitalo impressively sang the role of the villain Scarpia. The BR reported about him: "The figure also gains form and stature through the Bavarian State Orchestra under the grandiose Fabio Luisi: it sounds so plastic, so gestural and illustrative from the ditch that the orchestra alone tells its own horror story."

Napoleon's supporters incite a revolt in Rome. Their leader, Angelotti, flees into the church and meets the painter Cavaradossi, who hides him at his home. Chief of Police Scarpia is looking for Angelotti. His henchmen can't find him, so they arrest Cavaradossi. When Scarpia interrogates him, Cavaradossi denies. Tosca, Cavaradossi's lover, enters the room. The painter warns her not to reveal Angelotti's hiding place before he is taken away to be tortured. As his cries of pain grow louder, Tosca gives in. Cavaradossi is brought in. The news arrives that Napoleon has won at Marengo. Cavaradossi rejoices, Scarpia has him taken away to be executed. Tosca agrees to give herself to Scarpia. He promises her that Cavaradossi would only be shot in appearance. Tosca has a letter of safe conduct issued for her escape; then she stabs Scarpia. But he lied to her: the command fires sharply. Tosca throws herself to her death.
