To be grabbed from the first to the last second, drawn in, whirled around by the most intense emotions - that's Puccini, that's "Tosca". The Italian's legendary opera, composed in 1899 on the sharp edge of the penultimate turn of the century, thrives on the passion and intensity with which each individual vocal part is charged to the brim. And she thrives on a frothing, whispering, compassionate and roaring orchestra. Puccini attacks our sense of beauty, uses almost cinematic cuts, celebrates blazing highlights and leads us to the limits of the soul in a way that is both exhilarating and dismaying.
