C’est d’abord un simple accord du prélude qui fait trembler la tonalité et nous ouvre les portes de la nuit. Quitter la terre ferme. Plonger dans l’inconnu. Se noyer. Le chant nous arrache à nous-même et nous donne à voir et le passé et l’avenir. Tout est déjà contenu dans le premier regard qu’échangent les amants.

Pendant 4 heures d’une expérience musicale et mystique, Isolde et Tristan, vont se haïr, s’aimer, se séparer, mourir, se retrouver. En 1865, Richard Wagner - inspiré par sa passion pour Mathilde Wesendonck - offrait au monde ce qui devait devenir l’un des monuments de l’art occidental.

Si la tragédie, c’est pour les rois, alors Tristan et Isolde est une tragédie : il y a Marke, il y a le royaume, il y a la guerre et il y a la paix que l’on entend sceller par les noces du roi de Cornouaille avec cette princesse irlandaise. Ici, tout est public. Ici, tout est politique. Les amants sont les jouets d’enjeux qui les dépassent. Leurs choix, leurs actes affectent le monde et c’est pourquoi le monde fait obstacle à leur union. Mais ce monde peut aussi s’abîmer dans un simple regard. C’est en ça que le geste radical de Wagner nous touche : Tristan et Isolde nous dit qu’un seul instant a le pouvoir de remettre en cause la construction de nos vies.

Poète, metteur en scène, futur directeur du Festival d’Avignon, Tiago Rodrigues aime faire descendre les œuvres de leur piédestal pour les partager avec le public. Son théâtre unit dans un souffle le présent de la scène à la communauté éphémère des spectateurs. Il prend la forme de rituels fragiles et insolites : jouer une immense épopée avec deux comédiens, faire apprendre à une poignée de gens les vers d’un sonnet de Shakespeare, mettre en scène la souffleuse du Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II à Lisbonne.

Avec ses complices de création - les danseurs Sofia Dias et Vítor Roriz - il s’empare du mythe de Tristan et Isolde dont il suit le mouvement à travers les âges - au gré des transcriptions, des réécritures, des traductions, des malentendus, des erreurs et des errances. Il se fait à son tour le passeur de la légende qu’il conjugue au présent, écrivant sur le vide ces mots plus grands que nos corps.

Singing tears us away from ourselves and gives us to see both the past and the future. Everything is already contained in the first look that the lovers exchange.

During 4 hours of a musical and mystical experience, Isolde and Tristan will hate each other, love each other, separate, die, find each other. In 1865, Richard Wagner - inspired by his passion for Mathilde Wesendonck - offered the world what was to become one of the monuments of Western art.

If tragedy is for kings , then Tristan and Isolde is a tragedy: there is Marke, there is the kingdom, there is war and there is the peace that we intend to seal with the wedding of the King of Cornwall with this Irish princess. Here, everything is public. Here, everything is political. Lovers are playthings of stakes beyond them. Their choices, their actions affect the world and that is why the world stands in the way of their union. But this world can also be damaged in a simple look. This is where Wagner's radical gesture touches us: Tristan and Isolde tell us that a single moment has the power to call into question the construction of our lives.

Poet, director, future director of the Festival d'Avignon, Tiago Rodrigues likes to bring works down from their pedestal to share them with the public. His theater unites in a breath the present of the stage to the ephemeral community of spectators. It takes the form of fragile and unusual rituals: performing an immense epic with two actors, teaching a handful of people the verses of a Shakespearean sonnet, staging the prompter of the Teatro Nacional Dona Maria II in Lisbon.

With his creative accomplices - the dancers Sofia Dias and Vítor Roriz - he seizes the myth of Tristan and Isolde whose movement he follows through the ages - according to transcriptions, rewritings, translations, misunderstandings, errors and wanderings. He in turn becomes the transmitter of the legend that he combines with the present, writing on the void these words larger than our bodies.
