Although Tristan once beheaded her fiancé, the Irish king's daughter Isolde saved the life of the enemy king of Cornwall's nephew and fell in love with him. Tristan secretly reciprocates her love, but out of a sense of duty he now arranges for Isolde's forced marriage to King Marke. Deeply humiliated, she wants to end her life and take Tristan with her to her death. Since he wants to escape his feelings for Isolde, both voluntarily drink from an alleged death potion. Thinking they are close to death, they confess their forbidden love to each other. Tormented by unfulfilled longing and longing for each other, both have to go on living, but now they really want to be united in death... Inspired by the philosophy of Schopenhauer, Richard Wagner adapted the medieval epic Tristan in the 1850s and created a music that brings the overpowering emotions and streams of thought of the protagonists to the fore far more than any other opera before it. In extreme concentration on the innermost parts of the actors, who are hardly active anymore, he helped his almost symphonic music to develop and develop independently. By means of pronounced chromaticism and highly advanced harmonies, as well as by strictly dispensing with formal caesuras, Wagner created highly erotic music, an "infinite melody" full of glowing tension. Just like the ever-growing, all-consuming longing of the two title characters, she pushes more and more painfully for dissolution (or redemption), which is hardly ever granted.
