Un ballo in maschera is one of the pinnacles of the creative heritage of Giuseppe Verdi. The opera is distinguished by the beauty of the vocal parts, the expressiveness of the ensembles, the orchestral brilliance and what theater critics call "Shakespearean power". Verdi built musical dramaturgy on the alternation of contrasting moods, added bright lyrics to the mysterious and gloomy scenes, framed the tragic denouement with the stormy fun of a costume ball.
The plot is based on the story of a political conspiracy mixed with personal revenge. Since the libretto of the opera was repeatedly rewritten for censorship reasons, the directors have the right to choose the era and scene of the performance in accordance with their own concept. The performance of the Mikhailovsky Theater presents the history of the turn of the century: at the beginning of the 20th century, empires collapsed, and with them the usual way of life.
