"I was alone! One!... - wrote Verdi. - And in the midst of these terrible torments, I had to finish a comic opera. He did not want to write music anymore and asked the impresario La Scala Merelli to terminate his contract with him. But it was work that saved Verdi. Merelli persuaded the young composer not to despair and gave him the libretto of a new opera - Nabucco. After the success of "Nabucco", the twenty-nine-year-old Verdi found himself in the first ranks of opera composers. He worked tirelessly and premiere after premiere followed. Later Verdi will call this period of his life hard labor. During seven years (1842 - 1849), Verdi created thirteen operas, which were always successful. This period is characterized by his interest in historical and heroic themes, exceptional personalities and passions. Verdi himself directed his operas during their productions, he was generally the first to talk about the need for opera directing as such. The works, thanks to which Verdi gained world fame at the age of forty, were written during the 1850s and 1960s. It was during this period that he created operas that are still popular today: "Rigoletto" (1851), "La Traviata" (1853), "The Troubadour" (1853), "Sicilian Vespers" (1855), "Simon Boccanegra" (1857 ), "Masquerade Ball" (1859). During the next fifteen years, the composer was essentially silent. Together with his second wife Giuseppina Strepponi, Verdi returned to his estate and was mainly engaged in improving his already famous operas. In the 1870s, the last period of Verdi's work began, during which he gave the world such masterpieces as "Aida" (1871) and "Othello" (1887). Here the composer reached unprecedented heights in the field of musical means of conveying the psychology and feelings of the characters. "Genius old Verdi in "Aida" and "Othello" opens new paths for Italian musicians," Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote in 1888. The last - the twenty-sixth - opera "Falstaff" (1893) was the triumph of the 80-year-old composer. Giuseppe Verdi died on January 27, 1901 at the age of 88. National mourning was declared in Italy. The son of a village grocer, who was not accepted into the Milan Conservatory, rose to the top of the musical Olympus. There is not a single musical theater in the world that does not stage the operas of Giuseppe Verdi. His name became a symbol of Italian opera. «Я був один! Один!… – писав Верді. – І серед цих жахливих мук я мусив закінчити комічну оперу». Він не хотів більше писати музику і просив імпресаріо Ла Скала Мереллі розірвати з ним контракт. Але саме робота рятувала Верді. Мереллі вмовив молодого композитора не впадати у відчай і дав йому лібрето нової опери – «Набуко».  Після успіху «Набуко» двадцятидев’ятирічний Верді опинився в перших лавах оперних композиторів. Він невтомно працював і прем’єра відбувалась за прем’єрою. Пізніше Верді назве цей період свого життя каторгою. Протягом семи років (1842 – 1849) Верді створив тринадцять опер, які йшли з незмінним успіхом. Для цього періоду характерним є його інтерес до історико-героїчної тематики, до виняткових особистостей та пристрастей. Верді сам займався режисурою своїх опер під час їх постановок, він взагалі першим заговорив про необхідність оперної режисури як такої. Твори, завдяки яким Верді у сорокарічному віці здобув світову славу, були написані протягом 1850 – 1960-х років. Саме в цей період він створив опери, які й сьогодні користуються незмінним успіхом: «Ріголетто» (1851), «Травіата» (1853), «Трубадур» (1853), «Сіцілійська вечерня» (1855), «Симон Бокканегра» (1857), «Бал-маскарад» (1859). Протягом наступних п’ятнадцяти років композитор, по суті, мовчав. Разом з другою дружиною Джузеппіною Стреппоні Верді відбув у свій маєток і займався, в основному, удосконаленням своїх уже знаменитих опер. У 1870-х роках розпочався останній період творчості Верді, протягом якого він подарував світу такі шедеври, як «Аїда» (1871) та «Отелло» (1887). Тут композитор сягнув небувалих висот в галузі музичних засобів передачі психології й почуттів героїв. «Геніальний старий Верді в «Аїді» й «Отелло» відкриває для італійських музикантів нові шляхи», – писав у 1888 році Петро Ілліч Чайковський. Остання – двадцять шоста – опера «Фальстаф» (1893) стала тріумфом 80-річного композитора. Джузеппе Верді помер 27 січня 1901 року на 88-му році життя. В Італії було оголошено національний траур. Син сільського бакалійника, якого не прийняли в Міланську консерваторію, піднявся до вершин музичного Олімпу. У світі немає жодного музичного театру, в якому не ставилися б опери Джузеппе Верді.
