The hero of the story III. Gustav was King of Sweden and Scribe (original lyricist) poured the dramatic events of the year 1792 into the form of a libretto. The French Revolution and conservative forces were also preparing for a "match" in Sweden; the contrast erupted dramatically. Captain Ankerströhm fatally wounded the king with a single shot at the "Masked Ball" held at the Stockholm Opera House. Scribe rounded up an extremely moving and interesting story of the assassination of King Gustav. However, Daniel Auber's music did not bring the drama to victory. Two of Verdi's world-famous lyricists: Francesco Maria Piave and Antonio Somma created a new version of the libretto. According to the contract, the composer was supposed to perform "The Masquerade Ball" at the Naples Opera. All preparations were made for the premiere, but the work was banned at the last minute due to its political message. Prince Ventignana, the intendant of the Naples opera house, formed a committee to revise the text of Scribe-Piave-Somma. However, Verdi did not accept the changed libretto, withdrew his work and handed it over to the Roman opera. The Roman censorship allowed the work to be staged with a few minor changes, in which, if we peel back the layer of political murder from the plot, a love story emerges. In addition to political discontent, the real stake is a marriage in need of saving, in the background of which the visceral emotions of unrequited love and blinded jealousy move the strings. The masquerade ball - according to the author's original intention - III. The story of King Gusztáv of Sweden is interpreted by the young Italian director, Fabio Ceresa, who won the competition.
