Florian Specht flees over the roofs from a maddening husband, with whose wife he has just been caught in flagrante delicacy, and plops - from the rain into the eaves - through a chimney into the room of Susanne, the bride of his believer Martin Preller. Susanne locked herself in there with her friend Rosine because - on the wedding day of all places - there was a row with Martin. At this very moment the groom is standing in front of the door and wants to make up with Susanne. The situation is precarious - what to do with Florian? All paths are blocked, jumping from the third floor onto the street would bring certain death. In an emergency, the saving idea comes up and at the same time Martin can be given a little lesson.

When Jacques Offenbach opened his first own theater in Paris in 1855, the foundation stone was laid for the composer's extraordinary career, who paved the way for operetta as a new genre of musical theater and cleverly held up a mirror to the society of his time. In the shadow of his more extensive plays and above all his masterpiece Orpheus in der Unterwelt are Offenbach's more than 50 one-act plays, with which he made a name for himself almost overnight despite the restrictive theater policy of the French capital. He not only magically attracted the common people, the bourgeoisie and the nobility also crowded the coffers - although or precisely because his miniatures pointedly target social conventions in cheeky libretti and catchy melodies.

With A Husband in Front of the Door , a one-act play is now being performed in Chemnitz, which shows a breathless game of hide-and-seek and yet does not allow anything too human to be missed. The Buffonese plot promises excitement and fun right up to the last minute and shows, among other things, Offenbach's modern and realistic view of women. Sascha Theis, who will be employed as assistant director at the Chemnitz Opera from the 2020/2021 season, also introduces himself as a director with this production.
