Voormalig chef-dirigent Markus Stenz sluit het Matineeseizoen af met de opera Alice in Wonderland van Unsuk Chin. De Australische sopraan Siobhan Stagg zingt de bijzondere titelrol.

Droomwereld vol sprookjesachtige muziek
Met de uitvoering van Unsuk Chins Alice in Wonderland beleeft dit werk zijn Nederlandse première, nadat de opera in 2007 met veel succes voor het eerst werd uitgevoerd bij de Bayerische Staatsoper. De bizarre avonturen van het jonge meisje Alice in een hallucinante droomwereld vol fantasiefiguren inspireerden Chin tot haar meest evocatieve muziek.

Wonderlijke echo's uit de muziekgeschiedenis
In het eerste deel cirkelt het atmosferische orkest rond de vervreemdende verwikkelingen en emoties van de hoofdpersoon. In het tweede deel wordt deze kwaliteit gecombineerd met verwrongen flarden en verre echo's uit onze muziekgeschiedenis. Even klinkt Altijd is Kortjakje ziek, dan weer begeleidt een mondharmonica het soepkoor van de Mock Turtle. Een hoogtepunt is het Advice from a Caterpillar, waarin een basklarinet spelende rups steeds weer tegen de blue notes van Gershwin en Stravinsky's openingsmaten van de Sacre aanschurkt. De titelrol wordt vertolkt door de avontuurlijke Australische sopraan Siobhan Stagg, volgens Christa Ludwig een van de mooiste stemmen die ze ooit hoorde.

Dream world full of fairy-tale music
The performance of Unsuk Chin's Alice in Wonder land marks the Dutch premiere of this work, after the opera was first performed with great success at the Bayerische Staatsoper in 2007. The bizarre adventures of the young girl Alice in a hallucinatory dream world full of fantasy characters inspired Chin's most evocative music.

Wondrous echoes from music history
In the first movement, the atmospheric orchestra circles around the main character's alienating entanglements and emotions. In the second part, this quality is combined with twisted fragments and distant echoes from our music history. For a moment Altijd is Kortjakje ziek sounds, then again a harmonica accompanies the Mock Turtle's soup choir. A highlight is the Advice from a Caterpillar, in which a bass clarinet-playing caterpillar keeps bumping into the blue notes of Gershwin and Stravinsky's opening bars of the Sacre. The title role is performed by the adventurous Australian soprano Siobhan Stagg, according to Christa Ludwig one of the most beautiful voices she has ever heard.
