S’inicia aquest concert amb la primera audició de Null, de la ucraïnesa Victoria Poleva, un potent retrat sonor apocalíptic amb l’orquestra com a protagonista.

Seguidament, s’interpreta el Concert per a violí de Jean Sibelius. Tot i ser un símbol nacional a Finlàndia, el compositor buscava el reconeixement internacional amb la presentació d’aquest concert a Berlín. Malauradament, el pla va haver d’esperar i l’estrena, a Hèlsinki, va ser un fracàs a causa de la notable dificultat de la peça i al retard en la data d’entrega. Finalment, l’obra i el seu compositor van gaudir de l’èxit i la fama més enllà de les fronteres del seu país.

Tanca el concert una de les obres més conegudes i, al mateix temps, més misterioses d’Edward Elgar, les seves Variacions Enigma. Partint d’un tema original que –en paraules del compositor, no sona mai– l’obra modela una sèrie de catorze variacions, cadascuna d’elles dedicada a un amic que inicialment tampoc va identificar.

This concert opens with the first performance of Null, by Ukrainian composer Victoria Poleva, a powerful apocalyptic sound portrait in which the orchestra has a strong presence.

It is followed by Jean Sibelius’s Violin Concerto. Despite being a national hero in Finland, the composer sought international recognition by premiering this concert in Berlin. Unfortunately, this plan had to be postponed and the premiere, in Helsinki, was a failure, due to the work’s considerable difficulty and a delay in the delivery date. In the end, the work and its composer enjoyed success and fame far beyond the borders of his own country.

The concert closes with one of Edward Elgar’s best-known and most mysterious works, his Enigma Variations. Starting from an original theme that, according to the composer, is never heard, the work comprises a series of fourteen variations, each dedicated to a friend whom he did not initially identify.
