Jedním z vrcholů festivalu slibuje být inscenace Věci Makropulos v provedení Vlámské opery, která se uvádění Janáčkova díla věnuje pravidelně. Za dirigentským pultem stane jeden z nejvýznamnějších českých dirigentů Tomáš Netopil, který se interpretaci Janáčkova díla věnuje pravidelně jak na divadle, tak v koncertní síni. Futuristická produkce, která měla premiéru v roce 2016, je dílem předního maďarského filmového režiséra Kornéla Mundruczó, jehož filmová tvorba je pravidelně oceňována na předních festivalech, jako jsou např. Filmový festival v Cannes nebo Sundance. Mundruczó je také zakladatelem nezávislé divadelní společnosti Proton Theater, se kterým hostuje na významných divadelních festivalech, ať to je Wiener Festwochen, či festivaly v Berlíně, Bruselu ad.

Věc Makropulos je v Janáčkově díle logickým pokračováním. Po filozofickém tématu o koloběhu života v Příhodách lišky Bystroušky se skladatel obrátil k námětu zabývajícím se otázkami, zda nesmrtelnost může přinést lidem štěstí, nebo lidský život naplňuje právě nevyhnutelnost konce. Východiskem mu byla stejnojmenná hra Karla Čapka (1890-1938). Čapek se k žádosti o svolení ke zhudebnění stavěl zpočátku značně skepticky a na první pohled se může zdát, že měl pravdu – opera odehrávající se v neatraktivním právnickém prostředí, plná dialogů a velmi spletitého děje, kde vysledovat rodinné vazby je téměř úkolem pro odborníka na genealogii, není právě typickým námětem operního díla a to ani na počátku 20. století. Janáček ale text zkrátil a s neomylným citem dramatika stejně jako v Příhodách lišky Bystroušky změnil konec - v opeře na rozdíl od původní hry další z řady Janáčkových velkých hrdinek, nešťastná Elina Makropulos, které bylo souzeno žít 300 let a změnit se v bezcitnou kreaturu, nakonec umírá smířena se sebou i Bohem. Věc Makropulos měla při premiéře roku 1928 velký úspěch a dnes patří především v zahraničí k nejčastěji uváděným Janáčkovým operám.

One of the highlights of the festival promises to be the production of Væci Makropulos performed by the Flemish Opera, which regularly presents Janáček's work. The Makropulos case is a logical continuation of Janáček's work. After the philosophical theme about the cycle of life in The Tales of the Vixen Bystrouskathe composer turned to a subject dealing with the questions of whether immortality can bring people happiness, or whether human life fulfills the inevitability of the end. His starting point was the play of the same name by Karel Čapek (1890-1938). Čapek was initially very skeptical about the request for permission to set the music, and at first glance it may seem that he was right - an opera set in an unattractive legal environment, full of dialogue and a very convoluted plot, where tracing family ties is almost a task for a genealogy expert , is not exactly a typical subject of an opera work, not even at the beginning of the 20th century. However, Janáček shortened the text and with the infallible sense of a playwright, just as in The Tales of the Vixen Quick, he changed the ending - in the opera, unlike the original play, another of Janáček's great heroines, the unfortunate Elina Makropulos, who was destined to live for 300 years and turn into a heartless creature, finally dies reconciled with herself and God. The Makropulos Affair was a great success at its premiere in 1928, and today it is one of Janáček's most frequently performed operas, especially abroad.
