While on the surface Leoš Janáček's DIE SACHE MAKROPULOS is a crime play about a complex inheritance dispute, on a deeper level the opera raises existential questions about eternal life and what price you pay for that dream. We asked director Claus Guth what he thinks about eternal life.

Documentation of a rather dull inheritance dispute, crime play, meta-opera with a singer playing a singer, treatise on the sense and nonsense of human immortality - all of this is hidden behind »the Makropulos case/case«. With her inexplicable detailed knowledge, opera diva Emilia Marty stirs up those involved in an inheritance process that has been simmering for a hundred years and ruthlessly exploits the fact that all men have fallen for her for her mysterious intentions.

What no one knows: Under the mountains of paper from the trial lies a mysterious, ancient recipe for a potion that extends life by 300 years, which Marty has taken before and which she is now chasing to extend her life once more. But after literally walking over corpses and holding the document in her hands, she realizes the price of eternal life... Janáček's penultimate opera is not only his strangest because of its surprising plot. The main theme of all his operas, love, appears here ex negativo in its absence. Janáček transforms the distanced coolness and irony of Karel Čapek's acting into a veritable tragedy, which arouses pity for his unapproachable, wearied and emotionally impoverished main character. After »Jenůfa« in the last season, Simon Rattle is now continuing his Janáček cycle at the State Opera with »Věc Makropulos«, which is certainly the composer's harshest score
