Saint-Saëns, à la fois brillant pianiste et organiste, a composé son Concerto pour piano en sol mineur en 1868 en seulement trois semaines. L’œuvre s’ouvre avec un clin d’œil à ses talents multiples : un piano solo avec un point de pédale dramatique, superposé à une figuration spacieuse dans l’aigu qui s’accélère en cascades virtuoses suivi par l’orchestre introduisant le premier thème. Les deux mouvements suivants sont un Scherzando enjoué et léger comme une plume ainsi qu’une tarentelle endiablée. Les trois poèmes sonores de Respighi sur le thème de Rome, chacun en quatre mouvements, sont marqués par l’influence de ses leçons de composition avec le grand Rimsky Korsakov. Fountains of Rome (1916) dépeint initialement la fontaine rurale de Valle Giula à l’aube, avec un hautbois pastoral résonnant à travers la brume naissante. L’instrumentation non conventionnelle des Pins de Rome (1924) comprend le chant de rossignol enregistré en clôture du troisième mouvement dans un style plutôt sombre. Roman Festivals (1928) culmine avec La Befana, un chef-d’œuvre orchestral aux rythmes entraînants et aux voix dissonantes qui s’affrontent. Son style et son tempo changent du tout au tout, avec un trombone ténor solo qui « joue » un joyeux drille ivre.

Saint-Saëns was both a brilliant pianist and a brilliant organist, and his G minor Piano Concerto, composed within the space of three weeks in 1868, opens with a nod to both: solo piano with a dramatic pedal point, overlaid with initially spacious upper-register figuration which gradually accelerates into virtuosic cascades – after which the orchestra presents the first theme. The other two movements are then a playful, feather-light Scherzando and a racing tarantella. Respighi’s three Rome-themed tone poems, each in four movements, burst with the influence of his composition lessons with the great orchestral colourist, Rimsky Korsakov. Fountains of Rome (1916) first depicts the rural Valle Giula fountain at dawn, a pastoral oboe sounding through the early mist. Unconventional instrumentation in Pines of Rome (1924) includes the nocturne-like third movement’s closing taped nightingale song. Roman Festivals (1928) climaxes on La Befana, an orchestral showpiece of driving rhythms and dissonantly competing voices over which style and tempo turn on a dime, with a solo tenor trombone ‘playing’ a drunken merrymaker.
