På denne konserten får publikum en forsmak på turnéen med Ravels fascinerende La valse, via hans jazzinspirerte pianokonsert, til Stravinskys musikalske portrett av et russisk vinterkarneval.

La Valse er et uttrykk for Maurice Ravels fascinasjon av valsen som form. I ettertid har man lurt på hva Ravel selv la i stykket – var det en hyllest til Johann Strauss II og den wienerske tradisjonen eller var det en samfunnskritikk?

Ravels ønske for pianokonserten i G-dur var å skrive noe som ikke var så tungt og alvorlig, men lyst, lett, raffinert og fantasifullt. – I Mozarts og Saint-Saëns ånd, sa han selv. Det betydde imidlertid ikke at konserten var enkel å komponere. Verket innledes med et berømt musikalsk piskeslag og fortsetter med jazzinspirerte toner i første og siste sats, med en gripende vakker annensats imellom. Pianokonserten ble et av Ravels sist fullførte verk.

Stravinskys ballett Petrusjka, i kveld framført som konsertversjon, befinner vi oss på et vinterlig russisk karneval. En av attraksjonene er et tradisjonelt russisk dukketeater, og Stravinsky ser for seg at dukkene våkner til live!

At this concert, the audience gets a taste of the tour with Ravel's fascinating La valse , via his jazz-inspired piano concerto, to Stravinsky's musical portrait of a Russian winter carnival.

La Valse is an expression of Maurice Ravel's fascination with the waltz as a form. In retrospect, people have wondered what Ravel himself put into the piece - was it a tribute to Johann Strauss II and the Viennese tradition or was it a critique of society?

Ravel's wish for the piano concerto in G major was to write something that was not so heavy and serious, but light, light, refined and imaginative. - In the spirit of Mozart and Saint-Saën, he said himself. However, that did not mean that the concerto was easy to compose. The work opens with a famous musical whiplash and continues with jazz-inspired tones in the first and last movements, with a poignantly beautiful second movement in between. The piano concerto was one of Ravel's last completed works.

Stravinsky's ballet Petrusjka , tonight performed as a concert version, we find ourselves at a wintry Russian carnival. One of the attractions is a traditional Russian puppet theater, and Stravinsky envisions the puppets coming to life!
