Rachmaninow hatte noch nicht das Erwachsenenalter erreicht, als er 17-jährig sein großformatiges Opus 1 zu Papier brachte. Zeichen von jugendlichem Ungestüm haben in der farbenreichen Partitur ebenso ihre Spuren hinterlassen wie die romantischen Vorbilder Grieg und Tschaikowsky. Alexandre Kantarow, der erste französische Gewinner des renommierten Tschaikowsky-Wettbewerbs, übernimmt den Solo-Part. Umrahmt wird das Frühwerk des russischen Komponisten von den großen deutschen Antipoden Wagner und Brahms. Während Wagner mit seinem »Fliegenden Holländer« die letzte Etappe auf seinem Weg zum Musikdrama und damit zur vollkommenen Verschmelzung von Dichtung, Musik und szenischer Darstellung nahm, erreichte Brahms mit seiner ersten Symphonie den Gipfel der absoluten Musik.

Rachmaninoff had not yet reached adulthood when he wrote his large-format Opus 1 at the age of 17. Signs of youthful impetuosity have left their mark on the colorful score, as have the romantic models Grieg and Tchaikovsky. Alexandre Kantarov, the first French winner of the renowned Tchaikovsky Competition, takes on the solo part. The early work of the Russian composer is framed by the great German antipodes Wagner and Brahms. While Wagner took the last stage on his way to music drama with his »Flying Dutchman« and thus to the perfect fusion of poetry, music and scenic performance, Brahms reached the pinnacle of absolute music with his first symphony.
