Léon Carvahlo, director of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, was frightened by the pistol shot indicated in the didascalies and gave up producing Massenet's opera, judging the subject to be "sad and uninteresting". It is in Switzerland, in Geneva, that the French creation of the opera will finally take place. Using the resources of the great symphony orchestra, Massenet manages to create in Werther an intimate and penetrating atmosphere where romanticism reaches its climax through feelings stemming from the Sturm und Drang : the strong presence of nature unleashing the elements, melancholy and l ' perpetual dissatisfaction of the characters

Le chef-d'œuvre du romantisme allemand, qui porta Goethe au sommet de sa gloire, trouve dans l'adaptation lyrique de Massenet l'expression d'une sensibilité nouvelle.
Le jeune Werther, symbole d'une génération en quête de transcendance, s'éprend de Charlotte, femme vertueuse promise à un autre. Alors que l'été, temps de la rencontre, s'épuise inexorablement, Werther s'abîme dans un « mal du siècle » tragique. La quête idéale de Werther, adaptée au goût du public français de la fin du XIXe siècle par le librettiste Edouard Blau, s'oppose aux convenances bour­geoises de Charlotte dans certains des plus beaux duos de Massenet. Héloïse Mas et Régis Mengus interpréteront le couple romantique par excellence, sous la direction de Laurent Campellone
