The Sorrows of Young Werther, JW Goethe's novel about a noble and passionate young man who struggles with the woes of unhappy love until he finally chooses voluntary death. This story made an impact in Germany at the end of the 18th century like a small earthquake: it became a "cult" book of the then young generation and fundamentally influenced their sense of life. Werther became the embodiment of an unfettered sensitivity that frees itself from the shackles of social conventions. However, he paid for his inner freedom with tragic loneliness in the orderly, "reasonable" world of bourgeois morality. In his music, Jules Massenet expressed the ecstasy of love intoxication and the hopeless sadness of unfulfilled desire in a captivating way. At the same time, he brought to the fore the character of Charlotte, whose prototype became one of Goethe's youthful loves. A charming and wise girl renounces her love for Werther, maintaining fidelity to the husband; she decides to show her feelings only when it's too late...

Utrpenie mladého Werthera, román J. W. Goetheho o ušľachtilom a vášnivom mládencovi, ktorý sa zmieta v strastiach nešťastnej lásky, až si napokon zvolí dobrovoľnú smrť. Tento príbeh zapôsobil v Nemecku na sklonku 18. storočia ako malé zemetrasenie: stal sa „kultovou“ knihou vtedajšej mladej generácie a zásadne ovplyvnil jej životný pocit. Werther sa stal stelesnením nespútanej citovosti, ktorá sa oslobodzuje z pút spoločenských konvencií. Za svoju vnútornú slobodu však zaplatil tragickou osamelosťou v usporiadanom, „rozumnom“ svete meštianskej morálky. Jules Massenet vo svojej hudbe strhujúcim spôsobom vyjadril extázu ľúbostného opojenia i beznádejný smútok nenaplnenej túžby. Do popredia pritom postavil postavu Charlotty, ktorej predobrazom sa stala jedna z Goetheho mladíckych lások. Pôvabná a múdra dievčina sa odrieka svojej lásky k Wertherovi, zachovávajúc vernosť manželovi; prejaviť svoje city sa odhodlá až vtedy, keď už je na všetko neskoro...
