Prvo zrelo delo še vedno mladega dvaintridesetletnega Brahmsa je bilo že v svoji drugi, še nepopolni različici, podobno kot ob tej priložnosti, izvedeno na veliki petek v Bremnu. Za razliko od Mozarta, Cherubinija ali Verdija Brahms pri Nemškem rekviemu ni uporabil običajnega liturgičnega besedila maše za rajne, pač pa delo, ki je nastajalo postopoma, vsebuje različne odlomke iz Luthrove Biblije. Zaradi odmika od klasičnega liturgičnega besedila je Brahms zlasti pri teologih naletel na vrsto kritik, sam pa je pripomnil: »Kljub temu imam v sebi vero.«

The first mature work of the still young thirty-two-year-old Brahms was already performed in its second, still incomplete version, similar to this occasion, on Good Friday in Bremen. Unlike Mozart, Cherubini or Verdi, Brahms did not use the usual liturgical text of the Rhine Mass for the German Requiem , instead the work, which was created gradually, contains various passages from Luther's Bible. Because of his departure from the classical liturgical text, Brahms encountered a series of criticisms, especially from theologians, and he himself remarked: "Nevertheless, I have faith in me."
