Inspired by his personal destiny, Janácek composed this love song for piano and voice at the dawn of the 20th century. The Belgian director Ivo van Hove, whose international career still confirms his reputation, adapts this famous chamber opera for the stage by confronting the past and the present. A moving work.
In 1916, the Czech newspaper Lidové Novinypublishes anonymous poems telling the story of Janik, a young villager who falls in love with the beautiful Zofka, and decides to leave everything to follow this suspicious young gypsy. Deeply touched by the reading of this mysterious story, Janácek composes in echo a cycle of twenty-two pieces for piano and voice of an overwhelming intensity. The story of this passionate love is actually that which Janácek feels for his last muse, Kamila Stösslová, thirty-eight years his junior. This confession bears witness to this: “That dark gypsy in my Diary of a Disappeared Person was you. This is why this work is so burning with emotions. ".
The twenty-two tableaux draw a musical self-portrait, as much as they evoke a conflict between two worlds. Indeed, the barriers that separate the world of Janik from that of Zofka seem insurmountable. Just like those that Janácek must overcome in the face of morality. Encounter, triumphant desire, remorse spring from the melodies played on the piano, receptacle of all emotions, while the voices of the tenor, the mezzo-soprano and the female choir exalt the depth of feelings.
The Belgian director transposes this chamber opera to our time and leaves the countryside for the city. Janik becomes a famous photographer. To convey the composer's passionate impulses, Ivo van Hove incorporates excerpts from his love letters to Kamila into the show. He also invites the young Belgian composer Annelies Van Parys, who wrote several interludes to the work of Janácek there, like so many resonances to this fable on uprooting.

Inspiré par son destin personnel, Janácek compose à l’aube du XXe siècle ce chant d’amour pour piano et voix. Le metteur en scène belge Ivo van Hove, dont la carrière internationale confirme toujours le renom, adapte pour la scène ce célèbre opéra de chambre en confrontant le passé et le présent. Une oeuvre bouleversante.
En 1916, le journal tchèque Lidové Noviny publie des poèmes anonymes racontant l’histoire de Janik, un jeune villageois qui s’éprend de la belle Zofka, et décide de tout quitter pour suivre cette jeune gitane ombrageuse. Profondément touché par la lecture de ce récit mystérieux, Janácek compose en écho un cycle de vingt-deux pièces pour piano et voix d’une intensité bouleversante. L’histoire de cet amour passionnel est en réalité celui qu’éprouve Janácek pour sa dernière muse, Kamila Stösslová, de trente-huit ans sa cadette. En témoigne cet aveu : « Cette sombre tzigane de mon Journal d’un disparu, c’était toi. Voilà pourquoi cette oeuvre est si brûlante d’émotions. ».
Les vingt-deux tableaux dessinent un autoportrait musical, autant qu’ils évoquent un conflit entre deux mondes. En effet, les barrières qui séparent le monde de Janik de celui de Zofka semblent infranchissables. Tout comme celles que doit surmonter Janácek face à la morale. La rencontre, le désir triomphant, le remord jaillissent des mélodies jouées au piano, réceptacle de toutes les émotions, tandis que les voix du ténor, de la mezzo-soprano et du choeur de femmes exaltent la profondeur des sentiments.
Le metteur en scène belge transpose cet opéra de chambre à notre époque et quitte la campagne pour la ville. Janik devient un photographe réputé. Pour donner à entendre les élans passionnés du compositeur, Ivo van Hove intègre au spectacle des extraits de ses lettres d’amour à Kamila. Il invite également la jeune compositrice belge Annelies Van Parys, qui a écrit là plusieurs intermèdes à l’oeuvre de Janácek, comme autant de résonnances à cette fable sur le déracinement.
