Anton Bruckner, the bizarre genius from Upper Austria, was at the peak of his creative powers when he tackled his 5th symphony in 1875. He called it his “contrapuntal masterpiece”: the monumental symphony slowly develops towards the awe-inspiring final movement, in which all the contrapuntal connections of the preceding movements are revealed. Bruckner's Fifth is a stroke of genius, both technically and intuitively. The formal mastery forms its basis, but an unexpected and almost incomprehensible world of tones, sounds and harmonies opens up to the audience, filled with confidence and trust in the divine world order.
