The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra boasts 150 years of tradition of first-class musicianship in Zagreb and across Croatia. It acts as a promoter of the art of music in Croatia and a cultural ambassador of Croatia in the world. It is a symbol of the city in which it operates and a musical institution that captures the urban image of Zagreb as a central European musical, art and cultural centre. As early as 1871 the Orchestra became professionally active in Zagreb and in 1920 it acquired the name it still bears today. All the while, it has provided the Croatian capital with the very best classical music, shaping a history that has been written by first-rate chief conductors, such as: Friedrich Zaun, Milan Horvat, Lovro von Matačić, Mladen Bašić, Pavle Dešpalj, Kazushi Ono, Pavel Kogan, Alexander Rahbari. Vjekoslav Šutej and David Danzmayr. A bevy of renowned conductors have performed with the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra: Leopold Stokowski, Paul Kletzki, Sir Malcolm Sargent, Kurt Sanderling, Carlo Zecchi, Jean Martinon, Milan Sachs, Krešimir Baranović, Boris Papandopulo, Stjepan Šulek, Milko Kelemen, Igor Stravinski, Krzysztof Penderecki and many others. Recent guest performers include: Dmitri Kitayenko, Lorin Maazel, Leopold Hager, Valery Gergiev and Sir Neville Marriner. Also notable are guest performances by great soloists: Yehudi Menuhin, Antonio Janigro, Mstislav Rostropovich, Leonid Kogan, Luciano Pavarotti, Ivo Pogorelić, Montserrat Caballe, Alexander Rudin, David Garett, Julian Rachlin, Shlomo Mintz, Mischa Maisky...

The highlight of the 2011/2012 season was establishing a more active cooperation with Maestro Dmitri Kitayenko. His activities as artistic advisor to the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra heralded a new era in the Orchestra's history which was marked by a new artistic ardour, notable musical achievements as well as large-scale concert and discographical projects.

In July 2012 at Arena Zagreb, the Zagreb and Slovenian philharmonic orchestras accompanied by eight vocal soloists and a choir comprising nearly a thousand singers from Croatia and Slovenia and conducted by the famous Russian conductor Valery Gergiev produced the musical mega spectacle Symphony of a Thousand by Gustav Mahler. The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra has performed in most European countries, as well as in Russia, the USA, Mexico, Japan, Oman, China, Argentina and Kuwait. It is a regular fixture at the Dubrovnik Summer Festival and the Music Biennale Zagreb.  In February 2016 the Orchestra performed at Carnegie Hall in New York, the most prestigious music venue in the USA. The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra was invited to hold gala concerts on New Year's morning in Salzburg for four years running.

The Orchestra pays special attention to developing interest and familiarising children and youth with classical music via the Children and Youth Music Week project which draws a large number of young people of all ages to Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall every year with interactive musical projects for the stage.

In order to achieve the same goal, during the 2019/2020 season the Orchestra kickstarted its MINIMINI cycle which is specifically aimed at children by offering original productions based on well-known literary works, such as the Hedgehog's Home, Christmas at the Winterdreads and Hansel and Gretel, and provides a tiny musical gateway into the big world of children.  The traditional cooperation with the Academy of Music in Zagreb plays an important role in the Orchestra's activities by allowing prospective musicians to prove their mettle on the big concert stage and show that they are exceptional enough to become a member of the Orchestra.    For the first time in its history, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra realised a project financed by the ERDF and IPA II funds of the European Union, along with its partner Music Youth of Novi Sad. The aforementioned project called Filmharmonics, comprising of screenings of silent films with musical accompaniment by the Orchestra, visited four locations: Novi Sad, Ilok, Vukovar and Subotica, bridging the gap and pushing boundaries as well as enriching the cultural life of the local communities by merging two art forms – music and film.

Over the decades, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra has stimulated Croatian musical creativity by performing, premiering and recording numerous pieces of music by Croatian composers. It takes special care of young talented musicians and presents the Young Musician of the Year award to the best of them. The Orchestra has opened its doors to anyone curious of its work by organising the Doors Open Day under the motto ˮGetting to know the Orchestra means getting to love itˮ.

The Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra also boasts an enviable and decorated discography that has won myriad awards, such as the Croatian music award Porin, with albums released by reputable Croatian and international record companies (Virgin Classics, Deutsche Grammophon, Naxos, Parma Recordings, Oehms Classics).

The three CDs released by the prestigious record company Oehms Classics as recordings of Maestro Dmitri Kitayenko conducting performances of the works of Russian artists, such as Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky, Glazunov, Prokofiev and Khachaturian, have allowed the Orchestra to make great strides in showcasing their talent to the global musical and cultural audience and provide permanent archival material of a successful collaboration with Maestro Dmitry Kitayenko, one of the most important conductors of our time.

In 2017 and 2018 the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra received the coveted City of Zagreb Award as high public acknowledgement of their outstanding merit in promoting music and culture.

Helmed by their chief conductor Dawid Runtz, the Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra resumes

its successful concert activities.

 

PROJECTS

The Zagreb Philharmonic dedicates special attention to bringing classical music closer to children and engaging their interest, with its annual Children and Youth Music Week featuring interactive stage and music projects at the Lisinski hall, attracting a large number of young people of all ages.

Over the past decades, the Zagreb Philharmonic has encouraged artistic creation by performing, staging first performances and recording numerous works by Croatian authors. Particular attention has been devoted to young talented musicians, the best of whom receive The Best Young Musician of the Year award. Zagreb Philharmonic opens its doors to all who would like to take a peek at Orchestra and to get to know it from inside – under the slogan “Getting to know our orchestra means- getting to love it!“ the Orchestra nourishes its Doors Open Day.

In 2012 Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra became partners with Zagreb Film Festival in a project called Fil(m)harmonia, one that provides an opportunity for the Zagreb audience to enjoy blending of arts of film and music, with each feature film having a score played live by the Orchestra. Capacity crowds in the art houses are the very result of this music-film arrangement.

The City of Zagreb, Zagreb Philharmonic Orchestra and other cultural institutions of Zagreb joined hands in their continuing mission to provide new and interesting cultural programs thus kicking off an open-air classical music festival Zagreb Classic, set in a lovely Tomislavac square.

Zagrebačka filharmonija orkestar je 150-godišnje tradicije vrhunskog muziciranja u Zagrebu i Hrvatskoj. Promotor je glazbene umjetnosti diljem Hrvatske i kulturni veleposlanik Hrvatske u svijetu.

Zaštitni znak grada u kojem djeluje, glazbena institucija koja utjelovljuje urbanu sliku Zagreba kao srednjoeuropskog središta glazbe, umjetnosti i kulture. Daleke 1871. započela je profesionalna orkestralno-koncertna aktivnost u Zagrebu, a 1920. orkestar je dobio ime koje i danas nosi. Kroz cijelo vrijeme, u hrvatsku prijestolnicu donosio je najbolju klasičnu glazbu, a njegovu povijest pisali su prvorazredni šefovi dirigenti: Friedrich Zaun, Milan Horvat, Lovro von Matačić, Mladen Bašić, Pavle Dešpalj, Kazushi Ono, Pavel Kogan, Alexander Rahbari i Vjekoslav Šutej .

Mnogobrojni ugledni svjetski poznati glazbenici nastupali su uz Zagrebačku filharmoniju kao solisti na inozemnim turnejama i gosti u sklopu filharmonijskih koncertnih ciklusa: Yehudi Menuhin, Antonio Janigro, Mstislav Rostropovič, Leonid Kogan, Luciano Pavarotti, Ivo Pogorelić, Montserrat Caballe, Alexander Rudin, David Garett, Julian Rachlin, Shlomo Mintz…

Sa Zagrebačkom su filharmonijom uvijek rado surađivali i poznati hrvatski glazbenici, primjerice Ivo Pogorelić, Zvjezdana Bašić, Melita Lorković, Ranko Filjak, Vladimir Krpan, Pavica Gvozdić, Branko Sepčić, Stjepan Radić, Jurica Murai, Martina Filjak, Mia Elezović, Josip Klima, Monika Leskovar, Radovan Cavallin, Radovan Vlatković i mnogi drugi. Ne treba pritom zaboraviti ni uspješne i rado slušane koncerte s popularnim cross-over umjetnicima, primjerice Maksimom Mrvicom i duom 2Cellos.

Sezonu 2011./2012. obilježilo je intenziviranje suradnje s maestrom Dmitrijem Kitajenkom, jednim od najvećih dirigenata današnjice, koja traje sve do danas. Njegovim djelovanjem kao umjetničkim savjetnikom Zagrebačke filharmonije, otpočela je nova era u povijesti orkestra obilježena novim umjetničkim poletom, zapaženim glazbenim postignućima, kao i velikim koncertnim i diskografskim projektima koje planira u budućnosti.

U srpnju 2012. godine, u Areni Zagreb, orkestri Zagrebačke i Slovenske filharmonije s osmero vokalnih solista i zborom sastavljenim od gotovo tisuću pjevača iz Hrvatske i Slovenije pod vodstvom slavnog ruskog dirigenta Valerija Gergijeva izveli su glazbeni megaspektakl Simfonije Tisuće Gustava Mahlera.

Svoje koncertne programe Zagrebačka filharmonija publici nudi u tri redovita pretplatnička ciklusa: Crveni i Plavi ciklus, od sezone 2015./2016. i Off ciklus te od sezone 2019/2020 i MINI MINI ciklus za najmlađe.

Osim spomenutih koncertnih ciklusa, tu su i koncerti izvan pretplate, primjerice humanitarni koncert Pokaži ljubav u organizaciji Zagrebačke filharmonije i Rotary cluba 1242 kojim se prikupljaju novčana sredstva kao pomoć u liječenju najmlađih bolesnika; zatim tradicionalni humanitarni Koncert za život u sjećanje na Anu Rukavinu i maestra Vjekoslava Šuteja kojim Zagrebačka filharmonija podupire rad zaklade Ana Rukavina te Filharmonijski bal.

Zagrebačka filharmonija stalni je partner i humanitarne akcije Korak u život te svake godine priređuje koncert za sve sudionike akcije i građane koji kupnjom ulaznica pomažu u prikupljanju sredstava namijenjenih stipendiranju mladih iz domova za nezbrinutu djecu i udomiteljskih obitelji.

Zagrebačka filharmonija redovito sudjeluje i u programima Dubrovačkih ljetnih igara i zagrebačkog Muzičkog biennala.

Tradicionalna suradnja s Muzičkom akademijom u Zagrebu posebno je važan dio djelatnosti orkestra – prilika je to budućim glazbenicima da se dokažu na velikoj koncertnoj pozornici i izvrsnošću izbore svoje mjesto u orkestru.

Zagrebačka filharmonija nastupala je u gotovo svim zemljama Europe, u Rusiji, SAD-u, Meksiku, Japanu, Omanu, Kini i Argentini. U veljači 2016. godine,  orkestar je nastupio i na najprestižnijoj američkoj glazbenoj adresi, njujorškom Carnegie Hallu. Koncerti Zagrebačke filharmonije u novogodišnje jutro u Salzburgu, postali su neizostavni dio njezine koncertne sezone.

U sezoni 2019./2020. Zagrebačka filharmonija našla se na popisu albuma i imena nominiranih za najveću diskografsku nagradu Grammy! Zagrebačka filharmonija u ljeto 2019. u Koncertnoj dvorani Vatroslava Lisinskog u Zagrebu  pod ravnanjem dirigenta Tima Akinsa, snimila je nosač zvuka pod nazivom Something’s Happening! sa Cece Winnans, najprodavanijom svjetskom gospel pjevačicom svih vremena. Album je snimljen u izdanju izdavačke kuće Parma Recordings.

PROJEKTI
Posebnu pozornost Zagrebačka filharmonija posvećuje razvijanju interesa i približavanja klasične glazbe djeci i mladima kroz svoj Tjedan glazbe za mlade koji svake godine, kroz interaktivne scensko-glazbene projekte, u Lisinski privuče veliki broj mladih svih uzrasta.

Zagrebačka filharmonija kroz niz desetljeća potiče hrvatsko stvaralaštvo izvodeći, praizvodeći i snimajući brojna djela hrvatskih autora. Posebnu brigu vodi o mladim talentiranim glazbenicima, a najboljima dodjeljuje nagradu za Mladog glazbenika godine.

Svoja je vrata otvorila svima koji žele upoznati orkestar i naše glazbenike te naučiti nešto o 149 godina dugoj tradiciji orkestra – pod geslom „Upoznati orkestar, znači zavoljeti ga“ njeguje svoj Dan odškrinutih vrata.

Suradnjom Zagrebačke filharmonije i Zagreb film festivala, od 2012. godine u sklopu projekta Fil(m)harmonija, zagrebačka publika pozvana je uživati u spoju filmske i glazbene umjetnosti gdje je svaka projekcija praćena orkestrom koji uživo izvodi originalnu filmsku glazbu. Dupkom pune dvorane kultnog zagrebačkog kina Europa rezultat su snažnog interesa i zadovoljstva publike spektakularnim filmsko-glazbenim aranžmanom.

Grad Zagreb, Zagrebačka filharmonija i druge zagrebačke kulturne ustanove ujedinile su se u misiji širenja kulturne ponude grada Zagreba te pritom osnovali prvi open-air festival klasične glazbe – Zagreb Classic, koji sve svoje čari otkriva na popularnom Tomislavcu.
