Scene 6: "Manny Meets His Brother"
Manny, newly arrived on Ellis Island meets his brother Lou and starts a new job. Two days later, Lou hands Manny a letter stating that they are terminated because the company does not employ Jews. 

This is an audio and visual example from Guerilla Opera's first full presentation at the Old South Meeting House (Boston, MA) in October 2021. 

The ensemble features Taka Komagata (tenor) as Manny, Brian Church (baritone) as Lou with Philipp Staudlin (sax) and Mike Williams (percussion).

ELLIS Vanoni

A Woman, who is a Nazi concentration camp survivor, arrives on Ellis Island pregnant and gives birth. While on the island she unexpectedly finds her father, who is also a survivor, and in terrible physical condition. After a period of shock and panic, she decides to give her baby daughter for adoption. 

This character sings words from a letter she wrote to her future daughter. In the electronic sound design, we hear the voice of this woman’s real-life daughter telling the story of how she came to know her mother through this letter.
