Mauro Peter incarne un Narraboth lumineux et émouvant, qui pointe son poignard sur Jochanaan avant de le diriger contre lui-même. Michaela Schuster est une Hérodiade cynique et condescendante, alors que Wolfgang Ablinger-Sperrhacke compose un Hérode faible et veule qui ne peut à aucun moment masquer son désir pour Salomé. Pour la petite histoire, on signalera que chacun des cinq juifs est chanté par trois interprètes différents, Andreas Homoki ayant découvert dans la partition une note de Strauss disant que les voix des solistes pouvaient être remplacées par des choristes talentueux, à la discrétion du chef. La saison lyrique zurichoise a démarré sous les meilleurs auspices.

Aus dem verborgenen Palast, führt ein Steg hinüber zur sichtbaren Welt. Über sie betreten die Darsteller die Bühne. Dort symbolisiert ein riesiger Mahlstein die zerstörerische Kraft, welche sich langsam und drohend auf das Geschehen zubewegt.

Wirth has accompanied Thomas Hampson in recital, and the baritone played the role of Valmont in Les Liaisons Dangereuses for which Littell wrote the libretto. Their intimate knowledge of Hampson’s voice and artistry undoubtedly contributed to their creation of the character of Vermeer, in which they provided the singer with a role that is the perfect capstone to his long career.

L’excitation d’une création mondiale suscite toujours des attentes. En particulier celle de Girl with a Pearl Earring à l’Opernhaus de Zurich cette saison. Stefan Wirth, compositeur suisse de 47 ans, jouit d’une réputation certaine ; Thomas Hampson et Laura Aikin ont rejoint l’aventure et le petit génie discret de la mise en scène (et excellent librettiste) Ted Huffman rempile à la réalisation scénique. Girl with a Pearl Earring rejoint aussi la liste des œuvres lyriques qui trouvent leurs origines dans une double filiation littéraire et cinématographique, puisque le livret est extrait du roman éponyme de Tracy Chevalier (1999) et surtout de son adaptation cinématographique de 2003 (Peter Webber avec Scarlett Johansson dans le rôle de Griet).

The jaunty violence and paranoia of the piece were really effectively brought to life in three totally confident, big performances by singers Iain Milne, Samuel Queen and Andri Björn Róbertsson. Here was real music theatre, wound as tight as a spring, full of terrifying musical and dramatic strength.

Andri Björn Róbertsson...here reveals that the true bass repertoire is well within his grasp...Again the characterisation is strong and lucid-his sententious moralising, disapproving sobriety, visionary fear of god. All three roles require surprising excursions into falsetto, and all three sounded very good here. Particularly impressive at this was the Róbertsson who brought a fully supported sound right up into the high notes which meant that they were richer and more beautifully resonant than many a counter tenor that I have heard. Maybe a second career option!?
