In a gloomy forest, Golaud, the grandson of the King of Allemonde, meets the mysterious Mélisande, takes her home and makes her his wife. But when his brother Pelléas meets the mysterious beauty and they both fall in love, fate takes its disastrous course. Claude Debussy's setting of Maurice Maeterlinck's symbolist theater text is his only completed opera. The sound world he created is entirely at the service of the fairytale events and the characters driven by fate. Director Barrie Kosky, the director of the Komische Oper Berlin, landed a staging coup with his interpretation of Debussy's masterpiece, which, after performances in Berlin, is now being rehearsed at the NTM with members of the Mannheim ensemble. Kosky translates the opera into a psychologically profound chamber piece that reveals the shocking timelessness of a tragic relationship.
