The commission of the opera Maddalena to Thomas Trachsel derives from the desire to create an artistic product about the Ticino area and was created by Ticino residents.

The opera was therefore born within the Associazione Maddalena, whose promoters are a solid working group that has been collaborating for years to disseminate culture, classical music and opera in Ticino.

There has been more than one occasion in which its members have demonstrated effective enhancement of the cultural heritage of the area, both by sponsoring artistic products about the area and by involving local artists in their creation, culminating above all in the staging of two shows also linked to the Swiss tradition, namely Sacra terra del Ticino (Mantegazzi) in 2003 and Guglielmo Tell (Rossini) in 2007, staged in Piazzale alla Valle and the park of Villa Argentina in Mendrisio.

From the repeated successful experiences, the need arose to establish as a cultural reference in the area, with which to be able to carry out projects with independence and solidity, and at the same time expand its audience.

Thus, was born the Associazione Maddalena, whose name refers directly to the title of the first commissioned operatic work, and which is a non-profit organization that aims to spread musical, literary, theatrical and artistic culture not only through operas but also concerts, events, conferences, debates.

Currently, the members of the association are precisely those who first commissioned the opera Maddalena, in particular Carlo Silini, journalist and expert in the history of Ticino, author of the two novels which inspired the opera, Carlo Balmelli, the historic director of the previous aforementioned events, Rodolfo Bernasconi, who was the director of them and by Renato Bullani who was the creator. They are also joined by Diego Bernasconi, current director of the opera, Edo Bobbià, enthusiastic supporter, and Giampiero Ceppi, first secretary.

Madison Opera is a non-profit, professional opera company based in Madison, Wisconsin. A resident organization of the Overture Center for the Arts, Madison Opera produces three operas annually in addition to Opera in the Park and a variety of educational programming.

With the 2022/23 season, Madison Opera celebrates our 62nd year of being one of only two opera companies in Wisconsin that provide the experience of fully-staged grand opera.  Our mission is to produce opera of the highest artistic standards, and our three mainstage productions draw over 10,000 audience members each year to the Overture Center to enjoy both classic operas such as Carmen and modern masterpieces such as Fellow Travelers.  Our gift to the community, Opera in the Park, attracts over 15,000 people to Madison from across Wisconsin for a free concert on a beautiful July evening.

Mahogany Opera Group is a leading commissioner and producer of new opera and music theatre. Since 2014, we have created 19 new commissions and toured them extensively across the UK and internationally, receiving many accolades and awards for our boundary-pushing and inclusive work. The company’s vision and artistic programme is defined by Artistic Director Frederic Wake-Walker together with a broad range of artists, collaborators and creative partners from international festivals, regional venues, music education hubs, universities and orchestral ensembles.

Our ten-minute Snappy Operas have been developed with and performed by primary school children alongside professional artists. The Snappy Opera programme delivers in-school activity, teacher training and public performances in communities across the UK.

Various Stages is our Research & Development programme of open calls, workshops, public showcases, discussions, feedback sessions and mentoring support. It has been a platform for the creative development of over a hundred artists in the last six years.

Beyond the work itself, Mahogany Opera is a creative space for the development of new ideas and the sparking of new connections – a place where people can encounter music and theatre for the first time, where artists can forge new creative relationships and where time is given for research, reflection and discussion. Our approach is deeply collaborative and defined by people – by a belief that everyone involved has a creative role to play and that includes, crucially, the audience.

The Mahogany Opera team is based in London, Huddersfield, Glasgow and Berlin, giving us a unique perspective when creating work and building partnerships.

Mahler Student Festival Orchestra
The international Mahler Student Festival Orchestra was founded in 2022 by bassoonist Jappe Dendievel and conductor Lars Corijn. In March 2023, the orchestra gave its very first concerts, where Gustav Mahler's 2nd Symphony was on the program. Some 180 musicians stood together on stage for two sold-out halls. 

 

After a first successful project, the orchestra continues its mission with a brand new season in which 3 great symphonies will be on the stage. From Antwerp via Ghent to Leuven: the orchestra can be seen live in various Belgian cities during the new season.
