Scholarships for Young Singers
CALL FOR ENTRIES
Ópera de San Miguel AC invites young Mexican singers to register for the audition process
for scholarships that will be awarded at the end of the thirteenth edition of the San
Miguel Opera “Concurso” (Competition) on March 5, 2022. Contestants selected as
finalists after an in-person round of auditions will travel to San Miguel de Allende for a
week of master classes, and repertoire coaching, rehearsals, presentations and career
counseling, led by jury members, culminating in the grand finale of the Concurso, where
an international jury will award a minimum of three cash scholarships:

RULES
<ol>
<li>1) Applicants must be Mexican by birth or naturalization.</li>
<li>2) Be at least 20 years old by March 5, 2022.</li>
<li>3) Be no older than 30 years old for women and 33 years old for men by March 5, 2022.</li>
<li>4) Singers who finished in 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the San Miguel XII Concurso (2020) are
not eligible to participate in the XIII Concurso (2022). All other finalists and those award
winners and finalists from competitions prior to 2020 are eligible to participate again in
Competition XIII provided they meet all other requirements.</li>

REGISTRATION PROCESS

<li>2. Click on the CALL for entries link to access the entry form.</li>
<li>3. Fill out the online application form with all the requested requirements.</li>
<li>4. Once the application is completed, click on the SUBMIT button.</li>
<li>5. The Concurso Organizing Committee will send confirmation of receipt of
your application to your e-mail address.</li>
</ol>
 
Once the application form has been sent, send by e-mail to
apacheco@operasanmiguel.org, no later than November 28, 2021, only one of the
following documents:
Copy of birth certificate or valid passport or INE (National Voting Card) credential
(front only). This requirement is indispensable in order to participate in the
auditions and the Concurso.
Attach in the registration form a YouTube link (or other digital platform) with one
of the proposed arias, recorded in a simple and natural way, with clear sound,
without manipulation of audio and video, and of recent production, to live piano
or on a pre-recorded track.
The deadline for receiving entries will be Sunday, November 28, 2021, at 24:00
Central Standard Time (CST). No entries will be received after that date and time.
Due to the increasing number of applicants to this Competition, it will be necessary
to limit the number of singers participating in the in-person rounds of auditions.
The organizing committee will therefore review your application and video and
notify you whether you have been accepted or rejected for the in-person audition
round no later than Sunday, December 5, 2021.
AUDITION PROCESS
Preliminary auditions will be held in person on:

<li>Saturday, January 8, 2022</li>
<li>HOURS: 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.</li>
<li>LOCATION: Ballroom of the Hotel Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, Nemesio Diez #11,
Centro.</li>
</ul>
 
The organizing committee will provide an accompanying pianist for the auditions.
However, applicants may choose to be accompanied by the pianist of their choice, as long
as the applicants cover their own fees.
If accepted, the applicant will agree to travel to San Miguel de Allende at his/her
own expense.
If accepted, you will receive an email with your participation number, which must
be included in all subsequent correspondence with OSM during Concurso XIII.
If a singer who has been given an audition appointment fails to appear without
prior notification, he/she will be disqualified from participation the following year.
Registered singers will be given preference by date and time of registration. We
suggest that you register as early as possible before the deadline.
Each singer will be photographed for possible use in the program.
Any changes to the list of arias proposed on the registration form must be received
at least 3 days prior to the assigned audition date. Performing without having
prepared the arias on the list may result in immediate disqualification. All arias
must be from opera and not from other genres, such as: zarzuela, oratorio, musical
or operetta.

Audition attire should follow the following requirements:
Men: suit or sport coat with dress shirt.
Women: pants, dress or skirt to the knees (please do not bring long dresses).
After the audition rounds, the organizing committee will select the finalists who will move
on to the week of master classes and the grand finale to be held in San Miguel de Allende,
Guanajuato.
Participants from the audition rounds who are selected as finalists must agree to travel to
San Miguel de Allende the entire week prior to the grand final to receive master classes
and coaching in acting, music and languages, as well as career counseling from our jury.
CONCURSO WEEK PROCESS
Finalists must arrive in San Miguel de Allende during the course of Sunday, February 27,
2022, to begin classes on Monday, February 28 at 10:00 AM and finish with the final
concert on Saturday, March 5. Your attendance during the entire week is a mandatory
requirement without exception for all.
San Miguel Opera will provide lodging and a food stipend for the week. In addition, all
finalists must confirm in advance their availability to participate in the Winners Concert to
be held in San Miguel de Allende on Saturday, March 26, 2022.
 
 
Once the scholarships are awarded, the scholarship recipients will be able to use them by
submitting a proposal for a project to be carried out as part of their professional
advancement. The scholarships may be used only for, but not limited to: master classes;
registration to courses, both national and international; participation in competitions of
international prestige; singing lessons and coachings, or other professional expenses.
All contestants who have won a scholarship should be aware that the Artistic Director will
have the final say regarding the project submitted. If the above requirements are not met,
the Artistic Director may decline the project. Ópera de San Miguel&#39;s interest is to support
better opportunities to singers for their professional development, and it is with this
interest in mind that the Artistic Director will have the last word on the proposed projects.
All scholarships must be exercised during the fiscal year in which they are awarded.

OTHER PRIZES IN KIND
In addition to the cash prizes awarded to the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd prize winners, OSM offers
several other prizes each year. (NOTE: All the prizes in kind awarded in 2020 were
postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Concurso 2021 was cancelled entirely for the
same reason. Prizes in kind granted in 2020 will be redeemed in 2022.) They are:
The St. Eustache Festival Prize: Invitation to perform at this summer festival concert,
including accommodations, meals and a performance fee.
Steans Music Institute Prize: A three week fellowship at the Ravinia Center, summer
home of the Chicago Symphony. Includes housing, meals, daily coachings and lessons,
performances in recitals and masterclasses at Ravinia.
The Opera in the 21 st Century Prize: a full scholarship to attend the Banff Center for Arts
and Creativity in the Canadian Rockies of Alberta, Canada. Includes tuition, meals,
accommodations and travel expenses.
The Highlands Opera Studio Prize: full scholarship to attend the HOS in Ontario, Canada,
in August, including tuition, meals accommodations and travel expenses, and
performances.
The Marmande Prize: direct entrance to the semi-final round of the Marmande
International Voice Competition in Bordeaux, audition for 20 European opera directors
with the opportunity of winning a prize and/or offers of performance contracts.
The Jeunes Ambassadeurs Lyriques Prize: Transportation to Montreal, Québec, Canada in
November to audition for more than 12 opera directors from 10 countries, for cash prizes
and performance opportunities.
The Conservatori Liceu Prize: full tuition scholarship to attend Conservatori Liceu in
Barcelona, Spain, in the Master of Opera diploma program in 2021, and to perform in an
opera. Transportation and housing allowance included.
 
The Bavaria Project Prize: Travel to Theater Regensburg, Gemany. Participation in master
classes and in a group audition for 10 to 15 Bavarian theater directors with the
opportunity to receive engagements. Participate in a grand gala with orchestra at Theater
Regensburg. Accommodations and meals provide by Theater Regensburg.
(NOTE: Due to the pandemic, this project was cancelled in 2020 and 2021. In 2022 it will
become the Thuringia Project, sponsored by the Theaters of Meiningen and Eisenach, in
the state of Thuringia, Germany.)
OSM Angels also grant several memorial awards each year. In 2020 these prizes were

ÓPERA DE SAN MIGUEL, A.C. (OSM) is dedicated to discovering and cultivating the careers of
the most talented and promising young Mexican opera singers. Through its annual national
contest, Concurso San Miguel, OSM promotes young artists’ professional aspirations
through grants for advanced study, professional expenses and by providing performing
experiences, through concerts and recitals. Since its first contest in 2008, Opera de San
Miguel has become one of the most effective opera organizations in Mexico for advancing
the careers of aspiring young operatic artists by awarding grants and performing
opportunities. All grant money is raised privately from local businesses and individuals, many
of whom are expatriate residents of San Miguel de Allende.
Concurso San Miguel winners have gone on to participate in other national competitions
such as the Concurso Carlo Morelli in Mexico City and the Mexico District of the Laffont
Metropolitan Opera Competition. In addition, OSM singers have been full scholarship
recipients to the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia (AVA); the Palau de les Arts Reina
Sofía opera training program in Valencia, as well as graduates of the Barcelona Conservatory
Masters in Opera program, Spain; the the Chicago Lyric Opera’s Ryan Opera Center; the Los
Angeles Opera Young Artist Program; the Accademia Rossiniana in Pesaro, Italy; the Opera
Studio in Stuttgart; the soloist ensembles of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and
the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich.
Many of our Concurso winners have achieved a level of success internationally that was
unheard of for Mexican singers just a few short years ago. Our singers have made
professional operatic debuts at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City (the nation’s main
operatic venue), the Metropolitan Opera and the New York City Opera, the San Francisco
Opera, the Los Angeles Opera, the Santa Fe Opera; in Canada with the Quebec Opera; in
Europe with the San Carlo Opera in Naples, Opera Bologna, Teatre Liceu in Barcelona, the
Operafabriken company in Malmö, Sweden, and the opera companies of Basel and Zurich
(Switzerland), Innsbruck (Austria), Hannover, Regensburg, Stuttgart and Lubeck (Germany),
the Arena di Verona (Italy), and the Netherlands Touring Opera. OSM singers have
concertized in Amsterdam (the Concertgebouw), Russia (the Tchaikovsky Conservatory),
Slovakia, Istanbul and China, and have participated in the Salzburg Festival (Austria), the
Taormina Festival (Sicily), the Rossini Festival (Pesaro), and the Macerata Opera Festival,
among others.
