Victorian Opera is excited to launch the Ballarat Opera Festival as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to the cultural life in Ballarat and regional Victoria. Spread out across the year, the festival will consist of a celebration of song through three main events, all of which showcase Victorian Opera’s strong partnership with local performing arts groups and the people of Ballarat.

After the success of The Big Sing in 2023, this cornerstone event of the festival will return, continuing Victorian Opera’s partnership with the Ballarat Choral Society and other community organisations. In addition, 2024 will see the inclusion of a fully staged opera along with a lecture and recital series.

Victorian Opera’s new Artistic Director, Stuart Maunder AM, said,

“Welcome to the second Ballarat Opera Festival presented by Victorian Opera. At Victorian Opera, we seriously like to celebrate; our artists, our art form, our audience, and Ballarat. With three exciting offerings throughout 2024, we look forward to building our audience, showcasing new talent, giving local artists the chance to collaborate, giving students their first taste of our glorious art form, and all the while discovering new challenges and learnings. Bampton Classical Opera was founded in 1993 by its artistic directors, Gilly French and Jeremy Gray.

Our well-established national reputation is founded on a policy of breathing new life into little-known works of the classical period, in lively and accessible productions of exceptional musical standards, with some of the best of the country’s young singers.

Our staged operas are always sung in English, often in our own lively new translations.

We are committed to relaxed, accessible opera at affordable prices.  Bring your own garden chairs (Bampton) and enjoy a convivial pre-performance or interval picnic (Bampton and Westonbirt).  Make new friends through our Convivial Companion scheme.  We run a licensed bar and our associate caterers can provide picnics to order.

Bangkok's International Festival of Dance & Music began in 1999 to commemorate the 6th cycle birthday of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej. From its inception in 1999 to 2004, H.R.H. Princess Galyani Vadhana Krom Luang Naradhiwas Rajanagarindra was the Honorary Chairperson and then from 2004 until Her demise was its Royal Patron. From May 2008 H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn took over as the Royal Patron.

This annual festival is spread over five to six weeks between September and October. It is the largest and the only annual event in Thailand which gets such substantial and sustained publicity.

Bard Music Festival

The Bard Music Festival promotes new ways of understanding and presenting the history of music to a contemporary audience. Each year, a single composer is chosen as the main subject. The biography of the composer, the influences and consequences of that composer’s achievement, and all aspects of the musical culture surrounding the time and place of the composer’s life are explored. Perhaps the most important dimensions of the festival are the ways in which it links music to the worlds of literature, painting, theater, philosophy, and politics and brings two kinds of audience together: those with a long history of interest in concert life and first-time listeners, who find the festival an ideal place to learn about and enjoy the riches of our musical past.
