Garsington Opera gives performances of great artistic quality in a setting of extraordinary natural beauty. Performances take place in the spectacular Opera Pavilion, which sits within the rolling landscape of the Chiltern Hills, less than an hour from London.

Garsington Opera was founded in 1989 by the late Leonard Ingrams and his wife Rosalind at Garsington Manor, near Oxford. Following Leonard’s untimely death, Garsington Opera moved to the Wormsley Estate, home of the Getty family, in 2011.

The festival presents a programme of four operas each year during a seven-week summer period, often including a Mozart opera, and also champions less-known works which have included a number of notable British premieres to include Haydn’s Orlando Paladino, Vivaldi’s L’Olimpiade, and Rossini’s Armida, L’equivoco stravagante and Maometto secondo. Productions have also been taken to a number of European festivals and the company’s 2007 production of Richard Strauss’s Die ägyptische Helenawas presented at the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

Garsington Opera is committed to promoting excellence and engaging the very best performers from around the world, as well as championing talent from within the UK who are just beginning to make their names on the worldwide opera stage. Singers are given the opportunity to work with directors and conductors of distinction. In 2017 the festival launched a partnership with the world-renowned Philharmonia Orchestra who play for two or three productions each season and this year the internationally acclaimed English Concert begin a five-year residency, playing for one or two operas each year. The contributions of both orchestras and the enthusiasm and vibrancy of the Garsington Opera Chorus, most of whom are just out of music conservatoires, are integral to the Garsington Opera experience. Garsington Opera continues to introduce a new generation to opera through education and outreach and exploring digital innovations that will enable the Festival’s productions to be experienced by a new and wider audience.

Glyndebourne is an opera house in the Sussex countryside, just one hour from London.

It is home to:

• The autumn Glyndebourne Tour
• A widely respected education programme, now in its 30th anniversary year

In the world of opera Glyndebourne is unique. It is recognised globally as one of the great opera houses, reaching audiences of around 150,000 across the summer Festival and the autumn Tour, as well as many more through cinema screenings and online streams.

Glyndebourne all began with a love story in 1934 when founder John Christie met soprano Audrey Mildmay. It remains a very English institution. The opera house stands next to the country home of John Christie, who founded it in 1934. Now run by his grandson Gus, it is still very much a family concern. Festival audiences arrive from far and wide and an extended interval gives them time to eat in one of the on-site restaurants or enjoy a picnic in the gardens.

Glyndebourne is committed to presenting opera of the highest quality, commissioning new work, developing new talent and reaching new audiences. Glyndebourne has remained financially independent since 1934.

Although it receives valued Arts Council support for the Tour and some educational work, the Festival receives no public subsidy. Glyndebourne is a registered charity, funded by box office income, its members and supporters.

he Grimeborn Opera Festival returns for the fifteenth year, featuring thirteen operas, four new works and ten female directors from a variety of traditional favourites and new tales from across the globe.

Arcola Theatre has always championed adventurous artists, and this has never been clearer than in our Grimeborn programme this year. Music has the power to connect us, and it has always been our belief that opera should be accessible to all. Our commitment to affordable ticket prices means that everyone can enjoy opera and I am so excited to watch this year’s line-up.

Gstaad

In 1957 Yehudi Menuhin and his family moved to Gstaad where he was fascinated and inspired by the elemental power of the region’s natural environment and commanding mountains. He was impressed not only by the Saanenland’s magnificent alpine arena, but also by the meeting of Western Switzerland, German-speaking culture, and the nearby South with its Italian lifestyle. Since Gstaad and its surrounding area also offered an ideal environment for an international education for his children (among others, the «Le Rosey» Institute and the International Kennedy School are based in the Saanenland), Menuhin settled with his family in the area. Walking in the mountains with his children, the city-dweller discovered the natural world of the native population, who were also to inspire Menuhin with their folklore and music.
