The Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg (OPL) has embodied the cultural vitality of the country at the heart of Europe since its founding in 1933 as part of the broadcasting activities of Radio Luxembourg (RTL). From 1996, the OPL has been publicly administered, and in 2005 it took up residence at the Philharmonie Luxembourg, where it performs in a hall with outstanding acoustics. Uniting 98 musicians from twenty nations, the OPL is renowned for the elegance of its sound, which was developed by the successive chief conductors Henri Pensis, Carl Melles, Louis de Froment, Leopold Hager (conductor laureate since 2021), David Shallon, Bramwell Tovey and Emmanuel Krivine, and is currently shaped by Gustavo Gimeno, now in his eighth year at the helm of the orchestra. The label Pentatone released nine albums with the OPL between 2017 and 2021, when the orchestra began a new collaboration with harmonia mundi France, which has so far resulted in a recordings of Gioacchino Rossini’s Stabat Mater and Igor Stravinsky’s Apollon musagète and L’Oiseau de feu. The orchestra’s musical partners during the 2022/23 season include Artists in residence Sir András Schiff, Sir John Eliot Gardiner and Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, as well as Patricia Petibon, Maria João Pires, Martin Grubinger, Jan Lisiecki and Vincent Peirani. This season also sees the continuation of the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra Academy, giving young instrumentalists the chance to prepare for an orchestral career over the course of a two-year fellowship. Since 2003 the orchestra has been highly active in offering concerts and workshops for students, children and families. It also enjoys close working relationships with the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg, the Cinemathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg, CAPE in Ettelbrück and radio 100,7. After invitations to tour numerous countries, the orchestra will appear this season at the Konzerthaus in Vienna, at the Müpa in Budapest and in Stuttgart as well as farther afield in South Korea. The OPL is subsidized by the Grand Duchy’s Ministry of Culture and supported financially by the City of Luxembourg. The orchestra is sponsored by the Banque de Luxembourg, BGL BNP Paribas, Mercedes, The Leir Foundation, Spuerkess and Cargolux. Since 2010 the cello «Le Luxembourgeois», built by Matteo Goffriller (1659–1742), has been placed at the orchestra’s disposal, thanks to generous support from BGL BNP Paribas. Since the beginning of the 2022/23 season, one violin by Giuseppe Guarneri filius Andreae and one by Gennaro Gagliano are being played in the orchestra, generously on loan from the Rosemarie and Hartmut Schwiering Foundation.
