»My two symphonies exhaust the content of my whole life; It is what I have experienced and suffered that I have put down in it, truth and poetry in music.« Gustav Mahler wrote this after completing his 2nd symphony. and thus places the work in an autobiographical context. In his programmatic presentation of the first movement, he asks: "Is all this just a wild dream, or does this life and this death have a meaning?"
The last movement of the monumental work gives an answer to this. Because after an apocalyptic long-distance orchestra has called for the Last Judgment, the chorus proclaims the redeeming message: »Resurrect, yes you will rise«.

»Meine beiden Symphonien erschöpfen den Inhalt meines ganzen Lebens; es ist Erfahrenes und Erlittenes, was ich darin niedergelegt habe, Wahrheit und Dichtung in Tönen.« Dies schrieb Gustav Mahler nach  Fertigstellung seiner 2. Sinfonie. und stellt damit das Werk in einen  autobiographischen Zusammenhang. In seiner programmatischen Darstellung zum ersten Satz fragt er: »Ist dies Alles nur ein wüster Traum, oder hat dieses Leben und dieser Tod einen Sinn?“
Eine Antwort darauf gibt der letzte Satz des monumentalen Werkes. Denn nachdem ein apokalyptisches Fernorchester zum Jüngsten Gericht  gerufen hat, verkündet der Chor die erlösende Botschaft: »Aufersteh’n, ja aufersteh’n wirst du«.
