München war nicht nur die Vaterstadt von Richard Strauss, sondern auch die von Paul Frankenburger, der 1897 hier geboren wurde. Er studierte an der Akademie der Tonkunst und war an der Münchner Oper Assistent von Bruno Walter und Hans Knappertsbusch, bevor er als Kapellmeister nach Augsburg ging. Doch Frankenburger war Jude und emigrierte 1933 nach Palästina. Hier änderte er seinen Nachnamen in Ben-Haim und wurde zu einem der wichtigsten Vertreter einer zeitgenössischen israelischen Musik. In der neuen Heimat schrieb er 1942 ein einsätziges Konzert für Violine und Orchester mit dem Titel Evocation (Yizkor) (dt: Anrufung) – ein sehr bewegendes Stück, das Trauer ebenso wie Hoffnung zum Ausdruck bringt. Als der 2. Weltkrieg drei Jahre später zu Ende ging, war Richard Strauss ein Greis von 81 Jahren. Was er im Winter 1944/45 empfunden hatte, als der von Deutschland entfesselte Krieg unaufhaltsam an seinen Ausgangspunkt zurückkehrte und deutsche Städte mit ihren Opernhäusern, an denen seine Werke noch vor kurzem aufgeführt worden waren, in Schutt und Asche versanken, komponierte er in der erschütternden Klage der Metamorphosen für 23 Solostreicher. Es handelt sich um einen ca. halbstündigen langsamen Sinfoniesatz, der als Abgesang einer ganzen Epoche, ihrer Werte und Traditionen gelten kann – ein »Widerschein meines ganzen vergangenen Lebens«, so hat es Strauss selbst bezeichnet. Die beiden Werke aus den Jahren des 2. Weltkriegs werden umrahmt von zwei Kompositionen Ludwig van Beethovens: der tragischen Coriolan-Ouvertüre und der 5. Sinfonie. Letztere durchmisst vom c-Moll ihres ersten Satzes mit seinen unerbittlichen Schicksalsschlägen einen Weg »durch Nacht zum Licht« bis zum mitreißenden Marschfinale in strahlendem C-Dur.
