Howard Griffiths, who was appointed "Member of the British Empire" by Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 for his services to musical life in Switzerland (!), will be a guest at the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic in April. The Briton conducted the Zurich Chamber Orchestra for many years and was General Music Director of the Brandenburg State Orchestra in Frankfurt/Oder until 2018. In addition to works by English composers, he has also included Antonín Dvořák's Violin Concerto in his programme. In the United Kingdom, the Bohemian master enjoyed a high reputation even during his lifetime. Based on Robert Burns' poem of the same name, Malcolm Arnold wrote the overture "Tam O'Shanter" in 1955, in which he effectively illustrates the story of the drunkard and womanizer. In addition to intoxicating chromaticism and wild runs, Scottish folk melodies provide cheerful accents. Ralph Vaughan-Williams ' romantic Fifth Symphony was composed between 1938 and 1943. Dedicatee Jean Sibelius was enthusiastic: "This symphony is an excellent work... The dedication makes me proud and grateful... I wonder if Dr. Williams has any idea how much pleasure he gave me with that?" Antonín Dvořák was encouraged to compose a violin concerto by his publisher Fritz Simrock. After an internal performance at the Berlin Music Academy with Joseph Joachim as the soloist, the concerto had its actual premiere in October 1883 at the Prague National Theater, now with Dvořák's friend František Ondříček as the solo violinist . – The Neubrandenburg Philharmonic has entrusted Jan Mráček with the solo part. The young Czech won the Prague Spring in 2010 and the International Fritz Kreisler Violin Competition in Vienna in 2014!
