A change in the announced program has become necessary for the 9th Philharmonic Concert. The young Canadian conductor Jordan de Souza, who recently delighted the Dortmund opera audience with a brilliant conducting of The Magic Flute , will be on the podium. Two cornerstones of the French orchestral repertoire are new to the program in the first half of the concert. Le Tombeau de Couperin by Maurice Ravel is a collection of five musical gems in which Maurice Ravel pays homage in his own language to his great compatriot, the Baroque composer Francois Couperin. La Merby Claude Debussy, as a tribute to the sea and the forces of nature. The three movements of the work describe a wide arc from sunrise to the play of the waves to the storm-tossed ocean and culminate in a majestic apotheosis.

The promise of rags to riches in the United States drew countless people to the land of opportunity. Among them were George Gershwin's parents, who immigrated to the United States from Russia. For Gershwin, that American dream has actually come true. As the first American composer of world renown, he enjoyed universal popularity and great prosperity. The sum of his oeuvre is represented by his southern opera Porgy and Bess . To this day, it is the quintessential American opera, in which Gershwin fuses different tones of American music and thus creates a musical reflection of the diversity of American society.

Für das 9. Philharmonische Konzert ist eine Änderung des annoncierten Programms notwendig geworden. Am Pult wird der junge kanadische Dirigent Jordan de Souza stehen, der vor Kurzem das Dortmunder Opernpublikum mit einem fulminanten Dirigat der Zauberflöte begeisterte. Neu auf dem Programm stehen zwei Ecksteine des französischen Orchesterrepertoires in der ersten Hälfte des Konzerts. Le Tombeau de Couperin von Maurice Ravel ist eine Sammlung von fünf musikalischen Kleinodien, in denen Maurice Ravel in seiner eigenen Sprache seinem großen Landsmann, dem Barockkomponisten Francois Couperin huldigt. Als Huldigung lässt sich auch La Mer von Claude Debussy verstehen, als Huldigung an das Meer und die Naturgewalten. Die drei Sätze des Werkes beschreiben einen großen Bogen vom Sonnenaufgang über das Spiel der Wellen bis zum sturmgepeitschten Ozean und gipfeln in einer majestätischen Apotheose.

Die Verheißung, man könne es in den USA vom „Tellerwäscher zum Millionär“ bringen, lockte unzählige Menschen in das Land der unbegrenzten Möglichkeiten. Unter ihnen waren auch die Eltern George Gershwins, die aus Russland in die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika einwanderten. Für Gershwin ging dieser amerikanische Traum tatsächlich in Erfüllung. Als erster amerikanischer Komponist von Weltgeltung erfreute er sich allgemeiner Popularität und großen Wohlstands. Die Summe seines Schaffens stellt seine Südstaaten-Oper Porgy and Bess dar. Es ist bis heute­ die amerikanische Oper schlechthin, in der Gershwin verschiedene Tonfälle der amerikanischen Musik miteinander verschmelzt und so ein musikalisches Abbild der Vielfalt der amerikanischen Gesellschaft schafft.
