In 1922, Wan Laiming and his brother produced the first animation short, Shuzhendong Chinese Typewriter, launching the art of Chinese animation. Of the crowning glories of the past century, Shanghai Animation Film Studio's full color animated feature The Monkey King has been celebrated as a classic. Made in the 1960s and still popular today, it has dominated the childhood memories of many Chinese generations. In 2022, the BMF initiated and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra joined in co-commissioning LIU Sola to compose a new
set of symphonic dances inspired by this animated feature, not only evoking collective memories but also unveiling new directions in contemporary music.
LIU Sola & Friends Ensemble—on percussion, pipa and piano—is joined on stage by the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Zhang Jiemin. Together they expand the color palette and inject rhythmic momentum into the nine-movement work tracing the birth of the Monkey King to his transformation into the Great Sage of the Golden Gaze, as in the well-known tale from the initial chapters of Journey to the West. Every movement is imbued with irresistible rhythms and melodies that encapsulate his impetuous and carefree character as we relive the excitement in rooting for the Monkey King while paying tribute to a classic film and a century of animation.

1922年，由万氏兄弟制作的第一部动画广告片《舒振东华文打字机》上映，开启了中国动画百年序幕。在这百年历史中，经典国产动画《大闹天宫》是永远会被经常提及的经典，这部上影厂制作于上世纪六十年代的经典彩色动画长片是几代中国观众的童年回忆。2022 年，由北京国际音乐节发起并联合上海交响乐团共同委约作曲家刘索拉以这部动画长片为灵感创作了交响舞曲《大闹天宫》，不仅会唤醒现场观众的共同记忆，还将为观众呈现当代音乐创作的新风向，作曲家刘索拉全新创作的音乐聚焦节奏强烈、律动和谐的舞曲，以强烈的感染力彰显属于中国的独特节奏，探索中国当代音乐的新空间，拓展中国概念在世界音乐潮流中的视野。
除了充分运用交响乐的语言之外，刘索拉与朋友们乐队的打击乐演奏家、琵琶演奏家与钢琴家也加入进了张洁敏指挥的上海交响乐团行列中来，他们带来的节奏律动将为作品注入灵魂。作品共分为 9 个乐章，从美猴王出世一直到火眼金睛的齐天大圣的诞生，用音乐的语言完整地讲述了《西游记》开头处那段中国人家喻户晓的传奇故事，每一个乐章都是带有强烈节奏感的舞曲，作曲家以此展现齐天大圣那狂放的性格。且让我们在刘索拉笔下充满节奏感的舞曲旋律里重温“今日欢呼孙大圣”的感动，致敬动画百年，致敬经典名作，同时也是当代音乐家不断突破与探索的艺术生命力。
