Can love overcome everything? Against a backdrop of war, power and religion, a society is collapsing. Here we find Aida, in the middle of the crossfire between two warring parties and captured by the enemy. Against all reason, she falls in love with Radamès. We see the impossible but relentless love between two young people fighting against a completely chaotic reality. Aida premiered in Cairo in 1871 and is one of Giuseppe Verdi's greatest successes.

Michael  Cavanagh's  loaded new interpretation of the classic  Aida  with Christina Nilsson in the title role focuses on the inner anxiety that devours the opera's heroic but vulnerable people, and the premiere in 2018 was a success. SvD described the performance as "a pure joy" and DN thought it was "difficult to imagine a sharper and fresher Aida". It was in this set that Christina Nilsson made her debut on the Royal Opera's big stage, and her efforts in the title role were praised. "This is a breakthrough of large dimensions," SvD wrote after the evening. "Hard to imagine a sharper and fresher Aida." Wrote DN.
