In the palace of the pharaoh in Memphis, news of the invasion of the Ethiopians was received. The head of the palace guard Radames dreams of the glory of the commander. As a reward for the victory, he will demand the release of his beloved Hades, a prisoner of the pharaoh. Appearing Amneris, secretly in love with Radames, is struck by his excitement. Pharaoh's daughter is aware of his love for a slave. Aida's embarrassment heightens suspicions. Pharaoh solemnly communicates the will of the gods: the Egyptian troops will be led by Radames; everyone blesses him for battle. Aida is in turmoil, a painful struggle flares up in her soul between love for Radames and fear for her father, the Ethiopian leader Amonasro. She begs the gods to send her death.
In the temple there is a solemn rite of initiation of Radames.
The priests appeal to the gods to send victory to Egypt. The high priest presents Radames with a sacred sword.
Amneris awaits in joyful excitement the return of Radames, who defeated the Ethiopians.
At the sight of Aida, her doubts and jealousy are awakened with renewed vigor. Wanting to find out the secret from the captive, the daughter of the pharaoh says that Radames died. Aida can't hide her despair. In anger, Amneris threatens the slave with a terrible punishment. The sounds of a triumphal march can be heard from the square – the people greet the winner. Hades again prays to the gods for death - she is unable to give up her love.

In front of the pharaoh pass captive Ethiopians, among them Amonasro. He hastily warns his daughter, who rushes to him: no one should know his name and rank. Amonasro calls himself the military commander of the Ethiopian king, who died in a bloody battle. The captives beg for mercy; they are joined by the whole nation. But the priests inexorably demand the death of the vanquished. Finally, on the advice of the high priest, the pharaoh decides to leave Hades and her father as hostages. Radames he gives his daughter's hand. Amneris watches with triumph the mountain of Hades.
On the banks of the Nile, in the temple of Isis, Amneris prepares to marry Radames.
Aida is waiting here for her lover to say goodbye to him forever: she will not tolerate separation - The Nile will be her grave. With sadness, Aida remembers her beautiful homeland, which she is not destined to see again. Suddenly, Amonasro appears. He learned of his daughter's love for Radames, of her rivalry with Amneris. Her father paints pictures of a happy, free life in her homeland in front of Aida and demands that she find out which way Radames will lead the troops against the Ethiopians. Having met a refusal, he angrily curses Hades - she is not the daughter of the king, but the obedient slave of the pharaoh, who betrayed her homeland. Exhausted by the mental struggle, Aida agrees to fulfill her father's demand to sacrifice her love to her fatherland. At the sight of Radames, Amonasro hides. Radames is sure of victory, of the future happiness, but Aida does not share his hopes: the daughter of the pharaoh will destroy them. There is only one way to escape – to flee to Ethiopia. Radames hesitates, he cannot leave his homeland. However, Aida's reproaches make him decide. And when Aida asks which way the Egyptian troops will go, an unsuspecting Radames reveals a secret to her. A triumphant Amonasro appears - now the victory of the Ethiopians is assured. Radames is horrified: he turned out to be an unwitting traitor to the motherland. In vain, Amonasro and Aida calm him down, convincing him not to delay his escape. Seeing Ramphis coming out of the temple, Radames puts himself in the hands of the high priest. Aida and her father flee.

Amneris begs him to repent, promising him her love, the crown of Egypt, if he gives up Hades. But Radames is adamant – for the love of Hades, he sacrificed his honor and homeland. Pharaoh's daughter is gripped by conflicting feelings: she then threatens Radames with terrible revenge, then passionately prays to the gods for his salvation. The high priest Ramfis pronounces a verdict - the traitor will be buried alive in the dungeon. Amneris, in desperation, curses the inhumanity of the priests.
Radames is imprisoned in the dungeon of the
temple. Before his death, he dreams of a lover. Suddenly, a faint moan is heard, and Radames sees Aida, who, having learned of his fate, decided to die with him. Hades happily awaits death: now no one will be able to separate them. From the temple comes the singing of priests. Above the stone that closes the entrance to the dungeon, Amneris bows in deep longing, praying to the gods for peace of mind.
