On the occasion of the inauguration of the Cairo Opera House in 1871, the viceroy of Egypt commissioned a new melodrama set at the time of the pharaohs from the most famous opera player of the moment , Verdi. Thus was born Aida , a work in which grandiose temples and military parades are the backdrop to an exciting story of patriotism, love and death . Aida is an Ethiopian princess taken prisoner by the Egyptians and turned into a slave; her heart is divided, because she wishes to return to her land but she loves, in return, an enemy, the captain of the guards Radamès. The reversals of fortune force the two young people to choose between homeland and love; the tragic and very romantic ending will join them for eternity.

With its exoticism, which can take on very delicate or gaudy hues, and its extraordinary melodies , Aida is still one of the most popular titles today. It is in fact impossible to remain indifferent to the beauty of pieces like the Triumphal March and Celeste Aida .
The young Michele Gamba , much applauded for the great sensitivity he shows in the direction of Verdi and Puccini's operas, directs a cast of renowned Verdi interpreters, two for all the American soprano Angela Meade and the darling of our audience Erika Grimaldi . On stage the sumptuous staging by Oscar-winning director William Friedkin, inspired by the original architecture of ancient Egypt and created specifically for the Regio.

In occasione dell’inaugurazione del Teatro dell’Opera del Cairo nel 1871, il viceré d’Egitto commissionò all’operista più celebre del momento, Verdi, un nuovo melodramma ambientato ai tempi dei faraoni. Così nacque Aida, un lavoro in cui templi grandiosi e parate militari fanno da sfondo a una storia appassionante di patriottismo, amore e morte. Aida è una principessa etiope fatta prigioniera dagli Egizi e trasformata in schiava; il suo cuore è diviso, perché desidera tornare nella sua terra ma ama, ricambiata, un nemico, il capitano delle guardie Radamès. I rovesci della fortuna costringono i due giovani a scegliere tra la patria e l’amore; il finale, tragico e romanticissimo, li congiungerà per l’eternità.

Con il suo esotismo, che può assumere tinte delicatissime o sgargianti, e le sue melodie straordinarie, Aida è ancora oggi uno dei titoli più amati. È infatti impossibile rimanere indifferenti di fronte alla bellezza di pezzi come la Marcia trionfale e Celeste Aida.
Il giovane Michele Gamba, molto applaudito per la grande sensibilità che dimostra nella direzione delle opere di Verdi e di Puccini, dirige un cast di rinomati interpreti verdiani, due per tutti il soprano americano Angela Meade e la beniamina del nostro pubblico Erika Grimaldi. In scena l’allestimento sontuoso del regista premio Oscar William Friedkin, ispirato alle architetture originali dell’antico Egitto e realizzato appositamente per il Regio.
