The sorceress Alcina has built a place of refuge from the war raging in the world on her island. But the arrival of Bradamante, who wants to free her husband Ruggiero from Alcina's clutches, initiates the unmasking of the utopian paradise as a deceptive illusion.

With Alcina , George Frideric Handel composed his third, Orlando furioso , based on Ludovico Ariosto's fantastic Renaissance epic, in 1735(1516) based opera. Unlike Ariosto, whose world is presented in a clear division between good and evil, Handel takes an impartial view of life: there are actually no good or bad characters in his work. The composer even develops an understanding for the motivation of Alcina, who Ariosto portrays as a rejected figure – perhaps even particularly for her. Handel shows us the demonic destroyer as a deeply human person who is suddenly made vulnerable by love. She loses her magical energy and eternal youth. In his music, Handel combines sadness and cheerfulness, joy and pain in often light but also melancholic irony.
