Alexander der Große erhielt seinen Beinamen vor allem aufgrund der Eroberungsfeldzüge, die ihn bis nach Ägypten und an den Himalaya führten. Außer Dschingis Khan hat niemand ein derart großes Territorium erobert. Wegen seiner Leistungen und auch wegen seines schillernden Charakters ist Alexander heute immer noch ein Faszinosum. Der Makedonier, der zuerst die Vorherrschaft über Griechenland gewann, zog insgesamt zehn Jahre von Schlacht zu Schlacht, bevor er 323 v. Chr. in Babylon starb.

Die fiktive Handlung von Händels dreiaktiger Oper setzt mitten in einer solchen Schlacht ein: Alessandro hat gerade die Stadt Sirach erobert und lässt sich dafür von seinem Gefolge feiern. Darunter befinden sich auch die beiden Prinzessinnen Rossane und Lisaura. Rossane stammt aus Persien, Lisaura ist skythisch – und die beiden buhlen um die Liebe des Feldherrn. Alessandro ist zwar in Rossane verliebt, kann sich aber nicht entscheiden, ob er nicht auch Lisaura lieben soll, die wiederum von Tassile, einem indischen König, begehrt wird. Was wie eine geradezu klassische Lovestory wirkt, hat jedoch einen Beigeschmack: Alessandro ist der unantastbare Heerführer und die beiden Prinzessinnen sind seine Gefangenen.

Zudem sollen seine Gefolgsleute Alessandro als Göttersohn huldigen. Vor allem der makedonische Fürst Clito sieht das als Beleidigung der Götter, ist doch Alessandro ganz klar ein Mensch. Den folgenden Aufstand seiner Leute kann Alessandro jedoch abwenden.

Händel hat diese selten gespielte Oper für Francesca Cuzzoni und Faustina Bordoni geschrieben, zwei der berühmtesten Sopranistinnen ihrer Zeit, die die Partien der Prinzessinnen sangen. Entsprechend zahlreich und begeisternd sind die Bravourarien dieser Barockoper, die das ETA Hoffmann Theater als Koproduktion mit der Jungen Deutschen Philharmonie zeigt.

Alexander the Great received his nickname mainly because of the campaigns of conquest that led him to Egypt and the Himalayas. Except for Genghis Khan, nobody conquered such a large territory. Because of his achievements and also because of his dazzling character, Alexander is still fascinating today. The Macedonians, who first gained supremacy over Greece, fought from battle to battle for a total of ten years before dying in 323 BC. died in Babylon.

The fictional plot of Handel's three-act opera begins in the middle of such a battle: Alessandro has just conquered the city of Sirach and is celebrated by his entourage. Among them are the two princesses Rossane and Lisaura. Rossane comes from Persia, Lisaura is Scythian - and the two are courting for the love of the general. Although Alessandro is in love with Rossane, he cannot decide whether he should also love Lisaura, who in turn is desired by Tassile, an Indian king. What seems like a downright classic love story has an aftertaste: Alessandro is the untouchable general and the two princesses are his prisoners.

In addition, his followers should pay homage to Alessandro as the son of the gods. Above all, the Macedonian prince Clito sees this as an insult to the gods, since Alessandro is clearly a human being. However, Alessandro was able to avert the uprising of his people that followed.

Handel wrote this seldom performed opera for Francesca Cuzzoni and Faustina Bordoni, two of the most famous sopranos of their time, who sang the roles of the princesses. The bravura arias of this baroque opera, which the ETA Hoffmann Theater is showing as a co-production with the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie, are correspondingly numerous and inspiring.
