This was the infamous opera that made the composer’s fortune, performed in some 50 opera houses within two years of its 1905 premiere.

Setting Oscar Wilde’s play based on the biblical story, the opera’s final scene mingles horror with transcendental sensual passion.

It’s been a vehicle for the finest dramatic sopranos of the past century, and Marlis Petersen is among today’s most celebrated exponents of the role.

The concert ends with the Symphonia Domestica, where drama is closer to home – indeed, to the composer’s own home.

This expansive tone poem depicts his daily life with his wife and young son.

Fiery arguments, intimate conversation, daydreams and games all surge through Strauss’ orchestra in brilliant, startling colours.
