Breathtaking vocals, sudden changes of vocal register, whispers, squeaks, high notes. The extraordinary vocal skills of soprano Barbara Hanningan are pushed to the limit by the complex sounds of Jumalattaret , the cycle of songs composed by the genius of John Zorn for the Canadian singer and inspired by the Finnish epic Kalevala.
Hannigan, who with this interpretation proves to be a real force of nature, makes use of her unique and indisputable range of expression by tackling pieces considered technically at the limit of human possibility, drawing inspiration from the female figures of the Kalevala who do not fear violence and they know no human or natural barriers.
The piano part, equally insidious, is entrusted to Stephen Gosling, whose style has been defined by the New York Times as "brilliant, electric, luminous and balanced".
In addition to Jumalattaret , the evening's program includes two other pieces by John Zorn: Split the Lark and Solo piano works .
John Zorn, one of the most prolific avant-garde composers, arrangers, producers and multi-instrumentalists in America, has skillfully made his various genres including classical music, jazz, pop / rock. “Genres are just boxes where you can put things. […] Every day we have the opportunity to reinvent ourselves. Sometimes it is classical music, sometimes jazz, sometimes rock, but it doesn't matter, the important thing is that it is unique and that it comes from the heart ».
