Cheerful, fantastic play with music in two acts // Text by the composer freely adapted from Pedro Calderón de la Barca

Gasoline is not a stage contribution to the oil crisis of the 1970s, but rather an opera from 1929 . She dresses the ancient Circe myth from Homer's Odysseyin the frenzy of technical achievements that were part of the Golden Twenties: after circumnavigating the world, the airship Z 69 was almost on approach to the American airship port of Lakehurst when the fuel ran out. Luckily, Commander Ulysses Eisenhardt is able to make an emergency landing on an island that is not on any map. There doesn't seem to be a shortage of the necessary fuel, but it belongs to the billionaire's daughter Gladys Thunderbolt, and she soon makes a name for herself: With her hypnotic skills, she puts the entire male airship crew into a trance - except for Eisenhardt, who resists her. Challenged in this way, Gladys continues the battle between the sexes with other means, until they both recognize their feelings for each other and nothing stands in the way of the necessary delivery of petrol.

Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek, born in Vienna in 1860, had an early worldwide success with his opera Donna Diana in 1894, but was only able to develop his talent further in old age. His opera Gasoline  oscillates musically between the fascinating world of sound of Richard Strauss, the conversational tone of the operetta and the jazz and dance music that was spilling over from the USA at the very latest at the time.
