"There were many comic operas before Mozart, but very few significant ones.
Mozart was the first for whom comic opera went beyond mere entertainment. He was able to do this because he himself loved people, because he himself was a playful, witty, energetic person and because he wanted to capture the mood, the situation, the character with his music.

Schonberg, the New York Times music critic and music historian who was the first to receive a Pulitzer Prize for his high-quality criticism, was right when he wrote the above lines.
 
Mozart must have been a soul diver, since in this opera he asks questions about the changes in the relationships of the two lovers, about persistence and loyalty to each other, and gives - despite the fact that we are talking about a comedic opera - not very cheerful answers.
 
Even the title of the opera - "Cosi fan tutte", in Hungarian means: this is how they all do it - is thought-provoking, since the word "tutte" in the title refers to the ladies, the female members of the two lovers. According to Mozart, the play is primarily about the fickleness of women, and whether the found true love can withstand the trials that age throws at couples.
 
Mozart was a soul diver, since the answer he gave in the play is not operatic, but rather thought-provoking, and its final tone is more serious than cheerful.

Mozart volt az első, akinél a vígopera túllép a puszta szórakoztatáson. Azért volt képes erre, mert ő maga szerette az embereket, mert ő maga is játékos, szellemes, virgonc alkat volt és mert zenéjével a hangulatot, a helyzetet, a jellemet akarta megragadni.

Schonbergnek, a The New York Times zenekritikusának, zenetörténésznek, aki elsőnek kapott Pulitzer díjat színvonalas kritikáiért, igaza volt, amikor a fenti sorokat papírra vetette.
 
Bizony lélekbúvár volt Mozart, hiszen ebben az operájában a két szerelmes pár kapcsolatainak változásáról, az egymás mellet való kitartásról, hűségről tesz fel kérdéseket, s ad, - annak ellenére, hogy vígoperáról beszélünk – nem túl vidám választ.
 
Már az opera címe is - „Cosi fan tutte”, magyarul ennyit tesz: mind így csinálják - elgondolkodtató, hiszen a címben szereplő „tutte”- szó hölgyekre, a két szerelmes pár hölgy tagjaira vonatkozik. Mozart szerint a darab elsősorban a hölgyek állhatatlanságáról szól, s arról, hogy a megtalált igazi szerelem, kibírja-e azokat a megpróbáltatásokat, melyet a kor támaszt a párok felé.
 
Lélekbúvár volt Mozart, hiszen az általa a darabban adott válasz nem vígoperai, hanem sokkal inkább meggondolkodtató, s végső kicsengése inkább komoly, mint vidám.
