Presented with the Garonne theater 

In 1627, Heinrich Schütz, the "German Monteverdi", composed a pastoral to a libretto by the great Baroque poet Martin Opitz, based on  Ovid's Metamorphoses  : the nymph Daphne only escaped Apollo's assiduousness by transforming in laurel. The fire in the Dresden library destroyed Schütz's score forever. But the Austrian composer Wolfgang Mitterer, seduced by the preserved libretto, imagined with Geoffroy Jourdain and Aurélien Bory a madrigalesque opera in which the choir would be the hero and the electronics the basso continuo. Everything in this fascinating work – music, poetry, staging – is placed under the sign of metamorphosis.

En 1627, avec la Pastorale Dafne inspirée du livret éponyme d’Ottavio Rinuccini, Heinrich Schütz inventa en quelque sorte l’opéra allemand. Malheureusement, l’incendie de la bibliothèque de Dresde nous priva à jamais de cette partition. Le livret, signé de Martin Opitz, a survécu grâce à l’édition. Il a immédiatement séduit Aurélien Bory et Wolfgang Mitterer lorsque Geoffroy Jourdain leur en a proposé la lecture. Lui vient alors l’idée d’un opéra madrigalesque dont le chœur est le héros et s’exprime au travers d’un chant « multicanal », reprenant la tradition italienne de la fin du 18e siècle. La métamorphose est au centre du projet : celle de Daphné, celle de la parole en chant, celle du chant en polyphonie, celle de la polyphonie dans les mailles de l’électronique. Daphné, en tant que symbole d’un idéal de beauté absolue, parce qu’elle échappe à celui qui la pourchasse, invite par sa métamorphose à méditer sur l’impossible assouvissement de la quête artistique.
