“For me, art is a question of life and death” (Marina Abramovič) - Canio is the Bajazzo. Together with his wife Nedda, he has dedicated himself to a life for the stage. But she is dissatisfied, looking - for herself, for a different life plan and gets involved with another man. Canio is beside himself and a deadly game develops that no longer distinguishes between theater and reality. With “Der Bajazzo (Pagliacci)”, Ruggero Leoncavallo composed a highly emotional artist's drama in 1891, which not only tells of the most radical possible end of love, but also repeatedly raises questions that the director Ulrike Schwab explores in her first work for the Bremen Theater: Where is the line between artist: in and human? Between the stage and the audience? Does it even exist? What does art require? And how much are you willing to sacrifice for it?
