An immoral but highly lucrative offer lures him to help him out of trouble. Prince Basil Basilowitsch needs his help to solve the following dilemma: He has fallen madly in love with the singer Angèle Didier, but she does not have the necessary aristocratic title to make the connection befitting her status. For a considerable fee, René is supposed to give her this title in a three-month sham marriage. The condition, however, is that he must never see the gorgeous Angèle. Of course things turn out differently and the complications are inevitable ("Is that you, laughing happiness?"). With his masterpiece of late Viennese operetta, full of stirring melodies, tempo and wit, Franz Lehár succeeded in following the sensational success of The Merry Widow in 1909.
