In his opera "The Halit Yozgat Murder Case," Ben Frost focuses on society's powerlessness in dealing with the case. Singer Céline Akçağ reports on the work on this special premiere. On April 6, 2006, 21-year-old Halit Yozgat was murdered by the NSU in an internet café in Kassel. In the meantime, the negotiations against the members of the right-wing extremist terror group have been concluded and the trial files are under lock and key for the next 120 years. The composer Ben Frost takes the murder case and our social dealings with its consequences as an occasion for his opera. Based on the highly acclaimed installation 77sqm_9: 26min by the Forensic Architecture research team, he designs an evening with members of the opera and drama ensemble about our handling and responsibility towards history. The Hanover State Orchestra plays.
The first performance of The Murder Case Halit Yozgat was actuallyplanned for spring 2020 and could not take place due to the pandemic. The film that was made during rehearsals has since been invited to numerous digital festivals, including the Holland Festival Amsterdam and the Prototype Festival New York. In spring 2022, the opera will finally have its analogue premiere in the Schauspielhaus.
In his music, Ben Frost combines structured sound art with post-classical electronic music, physical energy with light-footed melodies, concentrated minimalism with expansive dark metal. In his work he is looking for new ways of combining music, body, performance and dance.
