The schoolmaster Baculus has a problem: In order to be able to serve a sumptuous meal at his upcoming wedding, he has secretly poached in his employer's hunting ground and now the count is threatening to fire him for his offense. The fact that Gretchen - his bride - offers to audition for him at the Count does not give Baculus any relief, because the Count's preference for young women is well known. A young student comes in at the right time, apparently selflessly, disguised as Gretchen to beg for mercy for Baculus. Behind the student demeanor, however, hides the newly widowed baroness - the count's sister - who, as the supposed Gretchen in the castle, not only enchants the count, but even induces the baron - the countess's brother - to offer the schoolmaster a huge sum,

 

Behind the extremely charming facade, Lortzing's play opera awaits with biting satire, from which no character is spared. Because although in the end everything works out well, in the end it is not only the schoolmaster who has to recognize that not every buck you shoot makes a good roast ...
